is the winchester core the best 3500+ for overclocking?
i'll have it on a DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX.

I would say Winchester is not.... Venice, then San Diego is the route I would go.

Winchester is the same as Venice core with exception the Winchester does not have SSE3 instruction set whereas the Venice and San Diego do.

Winchester's typically do not overclock as much either... you can expect around the 2.5 - 2.6ghz range with your chip...

Good Luck!!

i guess that's not too bad for a 60 dollar chip.
i really only play half life 2 and command and conquer, so i should be set.

i have another question.
if i use 4x 256 sticks, would it run faster than 2x 512 sticks?

No, most boards will drop the speed of 4 sticks of RAM to DDR333 speeds (even though they may be rated at DDR400) if you have 4 in, while having just two will leave them at DDR400 speeds.

Not sure on your particular board though...

I doubt it will be faster... usually an older chip's memory controller (Winchester's, Newcastle's, Clawhammer's) cannot handle the 4 sticks of ram as opposed to the 2 sticks.

I would buy a Venice just for the SSE3 instruction set. If you plan on having 1gig of ram then yes 512 x 2 is better.

Intels official SSE3 statement"The 13 new instructions in SSE3 are primarily designed to improve thread synchronization and specific application areas such as media and gaming." I would assume this would help half life 2's performance slightly.

I have that setup with the venice core on my vista/backup computer. It is presently running 2836.4Mhz prime stable stock voltage/cooler. It works pretty well considering you can get the 3500+ cheap now a days.

i got mine for 58 bucks from azn_plyr.
i'll probably gget a new HSF soon, and try to get around 2.6 ghz or so
