34GB missing on SSD...

I have a 225GB SSD with windows 7 installed. I was making space when I noticed that the used space seemed high for what was installed.

I went into explorer and right click properties on c: and it shows 87.1 GB used space. If I open my C: and ctrl+a then check properties it only shows that I have 53.1GB used. That is a 34GB difference.

Im no expert but I know enough to tell me this isnt right. Also, I know that there could be hidden files but 34GB seems like a lot. I already ran a disk cleanup and a few other cleaning programs.

Any help would be awesome.

Thanks

that and hiberfil.sys and system restore.

the winsxs folder is a freaking hog but apparently you need that stuff...

you know whats weird?!?

i just checked the properties of my drive and this is what i saw

53.1gb

spooky

Well I checked all things you guys suggested and managed to get it down to 84. So still looking for that 31GB...hm

i was gonna say provisioning for the drive, but that would make for an odd amount based on the drive size would it not?

You already ran disk cleanup...did you clear out Windows update shit from Winsxs?

Some SSDs/utliities (like Samsung Magician) also support over-provisioning when setup. Double check that as well.

Disable hibernation. That will free up as much space as the amount of RAM you have.

What is the page file set to? If it is on Auto, it can also eat up as much RAM as you have. There is absolutely no reason to have it set to more than 4GB, and even 2GB is probably plenty.

What about System restore. How much is dedicated to it? And what is the point of even having it enabled?

Also make sure that system dumps are turned to none, or else anytime your computer crashes, it will take up a ton of space.

Did you run drive cleanup, and select clean up system files? If not, you can probably gain a few more GB from deleting any service pack back files and by doing the Windows update cleanup.

BTW, just selecting all and viewing the size is not going to be accurate at all.. not even if you have it display hidden and system files.

In Windows, once you go past a certain amount of data, the size reading is all screwed up. It has been like that forever.. and MS has never fixed it.

I set the Page file to 2 GB. Hibernation is off and not even an option when I shut down. System restore is turned off. And I ran disk cleanup and cleared out all my extra BS. how can I check the system dumps are turned to none?

I had my buddy check his just for the hell of it and it gave a simlar difference in GB usage, but he has a 1TB HD while Im running a 225GB SSD. he had 250GB of installed info while Im basically at a clean install currently minus my CS suite.

I guess I just find it odd that there would be 30GB of extra unseen junk on my PC. Windows should only be like 25GB, CS is around 6GB, and all my other BS Programs take up another 5GB tops. To me I should have no more that 40-50GB used atm but its showing Im at 83GB.

Errr.

For the dump files go to:

Right click on Computer, select Properties
Advanced system settings -> Advanced Tab -> Startup and Recovery (settings)
Under System failure, change Write debugging information to none

To see where your missing space is, try TreeSize Free

Did you check the disk manager to see the partition layout for the drive? It sounds like another partition is setup but just a guess. As far as usage dont forget about those pesky windows updates you will have to run disk cleanup on the c and select clean up system files , this will allow you to remove the uninstall stuff from updates and will prob get you a few extra gb back.
