400 mhz cpu will do fine for word processing. So you can buy whole pc for like $50 bux in for sale forum.

True, but I figured we were talking mostly new, as referenced by "build" a system for $300 :p

You can go to your local surplus store and buy a complete system(probably a pentium II or celeron based system) for like $100-150.

if its just for word processing youll only need low end hardware. this is just a quick example. there are many other choices close in price. this one matches pretty well together in black/silver. this is the just about the lowest price computer i could put together at newegg currently...
