3.8 Quad CPU speed

When do you see 3.8 or faster quad CPU coming out? What speeds can we expect to see in Sept when I build new system
 
Well it seem the Q9650 3.0GHz won't even launch until Q3 this year. No including the overly priced QX chips (which are only up to 3.2GHz at the moment) I don't imagine we'll see much over 3.0GHz by September.

Also Nehalem will be coming out in Q4 (hopefully) which is a brand new architecture (you'll need a new board, and DDR3 memory) so if you are gonna wait until September, it might not be a bad idea to wait a little bit longer.

There's no way that Nehalem is coming in Q4. People were saying that 45nm would be here at the beginning of January at first... non-extreme Quads are just now hitting the market. I bet it will be at least a year from now before we see Nehalem quads. My guess is 2Q09.

Is there a reason that you want a "3.8 or faster" quad? Stock, we won't see one until at least Nehalem, and even then it'll probably be an extreme IF we do. If you're building in september, I would go for a Q9450. If you want to wait for Nehalem you can, but I don't think it will be worth it at the prices of DDR3 boards and memory, and that's ~6 months waiting.

Thanks for the reply. I was mainly curious when we might see stock at that speed. The board I'm targeting is gigabyte GA x48 DQ6. and 9800 GTX. Even if I waited a year always something better on the horizon. I'd like a board with DDR3 but, its too steep.
 
Trying to be helpful, not a smart asp.

I have a QX9650 running 3.8 right now. I like it.

I just set the FSB up to 1700 and the CPU goes to 3.8.

What I like the best is that the bios automatically enabled super step when I OC'ed and normally the CPU trips along nice and cool at a 2.4 but responds very quickly to any demand. It is the best of both worlds.

I run a Zalman 9700 LED cpu cooler at high speed all the time, I don't know if my CPU temps ever went above 110F in the last 3.5 months?

I could try water cooling but why bother?

I also put in 8GB of ram in on 4 sticks thinking Vista 64 would use it but it sees it but I don't think has ever used more than 4GB of memory.
