I'm thinking of buying some 400 gig SATA drives to store media on. I was curious if I put 3.5 sata drive bay enclosures in all 3 of my machines, if I could freely pull those drives out and put them in different machines as needed? Has anyone tried this? The only reason I wonder is that even with the enclosures, I wouldn't think the system would see them as removeable drives would it? (And no, this isn't a network issue as the machines are many many miles from each other).

Depends on how the drives are connected
you can get IDE Controllers that allow for hotswap, but they are not cheap
if you want to be able to freely swap the drives in and out use USB2 or 1394(firewire)
E-Sata may support hotswap, I dont know.... Ask Douglite

On a side note, please look at some of the threads in the section before you post your questions
there are curently 4 threads on external enclosures on the first page alone
