Trying to plan for my next folding box and I'm debating between a 4P AMD box or a 2P Intel -- and if I go Intel should I got with the new E5 Xeon's? Any thoughts?

I'd say 4p opteron. Buy the cheaper Supermicro board, and watch ebay for cheap 12ps. BTW, a 4p scores over double a 2p. You can put some hypothetical numbers in the bonus calculator to see the effect of 1/2 the frame rate. It's huge.

4P AMD.

Or 2P intel if you can get fast E5s cheaply.

P.S.
You could also consider turning your 2P AMD into a 4P..

Not a bad idea - one issue I'm having with the 4P boards though is size. I have a couple of spare cases I can use that support e-atx but most of those 4P boards are swtx. Are there any decent 4P boards that are e-atx?

No.

With a little creative sometimes you can get a 4P board into a case meant for e-atx boards. Or you could run it nekid as that is a popular option about here. I guess those guys don't have access to porn or something :D

Some of these folding boxes are at work and while they are in a "server" room they do need to be in cases. I could keep a 4P at home but probably need a case for that as well - I can just imagine what my cat would do to all those wires if left out in the open :D

There are none. Gotta mod something like HAF-932* or go naked!

*) I'm not a good source for case suggestions -- there may be other options too

Spotswood's tech trays are an option as well.

If noise isn't a concern I could set you up with Supermicro SC748-TQ. Plug-and-play.

Noise isn't a concern, so I may take you up on that. Those tech trays look really interesting and are apparently stackable.

PM hoth17 see if he still has one of the 2u SM 4p cases he was trying to sell a while back.

Used Mountain Mods case are great especially if you can find them use. First 4P went into a UFO I got off eBay for $100( and it included 8 88CFM fans ). The second 4P is going into a Extended Accession I bought off here for $150.

CoolerMaster Stacker 810 will fit one as is. Hard to find them since they have been discontinued.

Rosewill Blackhawk Utlra will fit one as is. They run about $200ish depending on where you look.

Hmmph who needs porn, porn is just that, porn. When you have nekid 4P's now that is SEXY :D

Xigmatek Elysium will hold a SWTX board and someone has modded a corsair 800D to take one as well.

As for the original question, depends on budget.

Existing lga1366 Xeon can be had on standard ATX boards, PPD is good for upto 120k on 8101 and about 175-180 on 6903/4 dependant on CPU speed.

E5 2p, as tear said CPU's are eye wateringly expensive so unless you can get cheap fast CPU's or can justify the build for other uses then I would avoid, Also most of the boards are E-ATX or SSI EEB.

I think the biggest hurdle I'm running into now is trying to find some Opteron 6174's for a great price. I really don't want to spend $1500-$2000 just on the cpu's if possible.

Looks like I'm going to hold off on a 4P rig for the time being. One of the vendors we use at work had a steal of a deal on a used pair of E5-2630's and a motherboard that I just couldn't pass up. I need to get a PSU for it but even including that cost I'm probably looking at $800 total.
