When it comes to video card reviews, it seems that everything is about the 3D stats. What happened to 2D perfomance? It used to be a big deal back in the day.

If I wanted a video card for watching movies or editing images rather than playing the latest games, there is really no place to get advice. What would you guys recommend?

I'd say a great majority of the cards nowdays offer excellent 2D performance, so it's not really that competitive of an issue. HW mpeg decode, fast 2D redraw, effects, they are included in just about everything, even the lowest end.
