2900xt sound chip

Na, its some realtek alc8xx peice of garbage, I mean ati is trying, but they can do better.

this is news to me. i heard they were gonna solder 5 pcspeakers directly to the card and place 1 cardboard cutout of a middle finger directly in between them all.
 
I'll be interested to know if one can output independently of HDMI to your amp. If it's HDMI only, there's just a few receivers that can handle the input.

However toslink is almost universal, or in my case (for the PC anyhow) a regular 1/8 jack for 2 channel for my powered speakers is needed. I don't even have a receiver in that room. I do have one unused in storage- not even Dolby Digital- my old Pro logic!
 
I thought it was just a pass-thru for whatever your sound card it to be integrated into the HDMI signal correctly? Just a formatter to take your already present sound, pass the digital data over PCIe to the card to be sync'd to the video on the HDMI output... yes/no?

Why would ATI bother to get into the actual "sound card" business onboard? Just anohter huge headache of software to hassle with.
 
That was my understanding of it. Just take the digital signal from wherever and output it over HDMI in an uncompressed format. Besides Realtek's onboard codecs are just as capable at processing sound as Creative's X-Fi if not better.

One of the realtek 8xx chips would make senes and I think i've heard about it somewhere before. Might have been on one of the board shots or something. They currently use those chips on most of their mobos so they have a history of working together.
 
That's not really proof. The ATI HDMI driver is used for HDMI output on some of the 1600's that have been on the market. It would seem likely that they would continue with what they've used in the past though.
