I'm trying to decide which of these two displays to get. I don't really care about input options as I'll only be using the display with my MBP. The glass vs matte isn't really a factor either as I won't be using it in a bright room. The main thing I am concerned about is which one has better colour accuracy and which has the better contrast.

If any graphics professionals have either of these monitors, I'd love to read your insights on either monitor.

They're basically the same panel, with the Dell having a wider gamut since it doesn't use LEDs for backlighting. If you have a MBP then you should give the ACD a try, but I went through 5 or 6 of them and concluded the uniformity is not up to the level of a pro display.

For about 100 bucks more you could get the NEC PA271W. You won't get that level of uniformity out of the Dell or Apple.

when I read those reviews it seemed to me that the main reasons why they gave the U2711 a better review are things like connectivity, ergonomic features, etc.
I'm not really concerned about those things, although the features of the ACD intrigue me more as a MBP user. What I am really concerned about is how well each perform in terms of colour accuracy, contrast, brightness, etc.

These are two very different monitors, but it appears that all the things that differentiated them don't concern you. Glossy vs matte, connectivity, ergonomics.

Once you remove all that they are more the same than different. They are both LG IPS panels of the same dimensions and similar contrast.

Unmentioned so far.

The Dell has multitude of controls to for color. The Apple has none for anything.

I would lean toward the Dell.

Well to update things, I have decided against the ACD, but another has been suggested to me on a mac forum. The NEC 2690WUXi2 has been suggested to me and I am thoroughly intrigued, especially since I can get a refurb one for less than what the dell costs.

Can beat NEC, and of top of that 16:10 good choice! ;)

thats what i'm hearing. Looks like i'll be going with the NEC and getting a spectraviewII calibration unit. From everything I am hearing and have researched in the last 24hrs, it will give me fantastic colour reproduction, far better than what the dell would. Also it seems that dell has spotty quality control, but NEC does not.

Exactly, you did good research, i own an 2490 and i can confirm everything they said. The NEC 2690/2490 series are amazing monitors...

My suggestion is "none of the above".

The HPZR30W is superior to both since it works just fine with any modern video card, right out of the box. The ACD requires finicky cables and installation of their clumsy software.

The Dell has a terrible anti-glare coating that simply disqualifies it for use for any serious or professional work.

The HPZR30W has a much more mild AG coating, superior gaming performance due to the fact it doesn't employ a scaler or OSD, and is made by a more reputable company.

Yea, i'm definitely not interested in the HP you mentioned. If you had read the psts since my original you would see that I have chosen the NEC 2690WUXi2. Also as stated in my original post I am using a macbook pro so some of the things you mentioned about the ACD do not apply. As well, I do not give a crap about gaming performance.

SpectraView Calibration is Tops IMO.

Most other calibration will call for you to mess around manually with some monitor controls and will then change you gamma curve using the graphics card.

Spectra view will make all changes automatically on the monitor and will load a much more precise gamma curve directly into the monitor itself.

that is precisely why i want the spectraview

I'm also looking into buying a calibrator as well. Can I get this online anywhere? I did a quick search but it doesn't seem like this is carried by anyone. Also, this is 100% automatic, right? You don't have to fiddle with anything, just plug it in, and it automatically calibrates your monitor? That's what I'm looking for. All these other calibration tools seem overly complicated.

Spectraview only works with NEC monitors, that is why it is a one click, 100% automatic program, it commicates and controls all aspects of the monitor and it also sets the monitor LUTs instead of the graphic card LUTs.

Though some newer alternatives must communicate with some monitors via Display Data Channel to automate other monitor calibration, I haven't' seen any.

If you are using an Apple LCD, I don't think there is anything to control and everything will have to be through the video cards, so it may be fairly automatic assuming the calibration package can deal with doing everything through the graphics card.
