2600k Overclock headroom

I'm not new by any means to overclocking...but have been a tad lazy about reading everything SB related. I just pressed the autotune button on my Asus p8p67 pro and it yieled 4738 mhz after doing its thing (103 x 46). How much head room do you guys think I have? It's currently being cooled by a corsair A70 and is running at about 25-35c idle according to speedfan 4.42. Thoughts?

I did the autotune on mine also - then disregarded it completely and did my own.

First tune was 4100, I said to keep going. Second result was 4750. It booted into windows just fine. I started up Intel BUrn Test. My alarms in Asus AI Suite went off saying I was over 1.35 volts and over 80C. The Autotune had set Vcore to 1.5v and temps were at 85C. I immediately shut the PC down and went with my own OC setup. The reason for your voltage fluctuations is the "Auto" setting on Vcore. The low voltage is occurring during idle, high during load. If you set it manually it will not fluctuate from where you have it set to (less vdroop).

I got 44x100 P95-blend-test-stable (12 hours) @ 1.275v.

I thought you said you were not new to overclocking?....

First, that's speedstep downclocking. Second, idle temps don't matter. Third, 1.42volts is too high for a 4.7ghz overclock. Leave the BLCK be and adjust the multi/voltage and go from there.
 
with 2600k, overclocking is very cpu dependent, i.e., every CPU is different. However, with that said, the stepping of your CPU puts the overclocking ability into two different groups. If you have the D1 Stepping, you are in luck. You are looking at a minimum of 4.8G and up and many had been overclocked over 5.2G. If you have the D2 Stepping, you are looking at a minimum of 4.4G and only maybe 5 % of these can ever achieve over 4.8G.

What are you talking about? D1 chips are engineering samples only. Unless you got it from a "friend" or on Ebay, you have a D2 stepping chip. D1's are also, relatively, poor overclockers. You cannot enable PLL Overvoltage on them at all. D2 steppings are retail. Plenty of people 5ghz and over on these as well.

No. Most of the high overclocked 2600k's are not D1, but D2, because of the sheer number of D2's out there. Just check out Xtremesystems or OCN or OCUK. Most of those guys do not have engineering samples and are doing fine. And many, like myself, are hitting 5.0 on air with relatively low voltage and good temps. Fact is you have no empirical data proving that D1 are better, and any statistical set even showing D1's as superior overclockers will be moot because of the data set being too small.
 
Well I BSOD like crazy, unfortunately. I'm running at 1.4v @ 4.7ghz with pll overvoltage off (was causing problems coming out of sleep and was generally more unstable). My tems with the Corsair A70 hit mid-to-high 80swhile running prime95. Funny thing is prime95 and ibt will run fine for 1 or 2 hrs and then I'd either get a BSOD with them off while surfing the net or as I just boot into windows. I have a feeling this is just a bad overclocker.

Perhaps it's the ram bsoding? It's not being overclocked...but I do recall some BSOD's at stock speeds...can't recall if they were of the same type. I bought some PNY Optima DDR 3 1333 from New Egg, tempted to return it if I find it the culprit. To be quite honest, I'm tempted to replace the board, cpu, and ram if this doesn't clear up in the next few days. Hopefully a bios update from Asus will help. Let me be clear, I know 5Ghz, as obtainable as it is for many, is not something everyone reaches. However, struggling to get 4.5-4.7 on 1.4-1.43v is pretty mediocre when compared to most using this chip. The constant BSODing also is not putting a smile on my face.

Side-note: Out of curiousity, how much damage can one cause by overvolting a cpu for a split second (to both cpu and board)? I had a moment of dyslexia, about an hour ago, in which I put '1.74' instead of '1.47' and the bios realized it was a voltage issue. I corrected it immedietely.
 
It is probably the memory. When I oc mine, I had to lower my 2133 to 1866 if I want to get more than 47 in multiplier. I also had to move my voltage to 1.42 to be stable. In addition, if you have D2 stepping, you have to "enable" the PLL overvoltage, not just set at "AUTO". This will give you the extra miles that you are looking for.
 
Using PLL overvoltage has caused me instability. It's actually off right now. I'm running at 47 multi at 1.39v, 1.37 was great for an hour....then bsod (when prime was actually turned off) and 1.4 is too hot. PLL overvolt is causing me issues coming out of sleep and just plain instability, can't afford to turn it on atm. Hopefully i'tll be stable in a few hrs.
 
I think an EFI update will fix your sleep issue, as I believe PLL overvoltage is recommended. Also when I had speedfan 4.42 it wasn't reading the temps correctly for my 2500k on a P8P67 pro, I had to get the 4.43 beta. Or just use CoreTemp, RealTemp etc, I know for sure CoreTemp reads it correctly
