Just finished the new build, p67a-gd65/8gb g.skill@1600/2500k. I'm sitting at 4.6 stable(using prime95) and my temps are mid 60s and one of the cores will occasionally hit 70ish. Cpu voltage sitting at 1.38 right now, is 1.38 acceptable for daily use and same question for my temps?
 
i'm thinking you could turn the voltage down to 1.35 or 1.3 My voltage is 1.31
 
Yeah id go little lower on volts also, im running 4.8 stable right now on 1.35. Havent even start tweeking volts to get it stable lower yet. high 60s with prime

With that multiplier you should look into setting up auto voltage and turbo boost with EIST enabled. Should lower your temps and keep voltage safe as possible. Most 2500ks can do this at least at 43x multiplier. I'm doing it for everyday usage with a 45 multiplier Intel Burn Test stable. Works well. I've seen some other 2500ks go all the way to 48x using this method. All depends on the luck of the draw on the 2500k over clock ability.

Looking at getting a 2500k myself and installing a H80 for cooling, what type of cooling performance should I expect. Will the H80 give me full access to what the chip is capable of?

You should be able to do 5.0GHz.
 
Wow, I hope so. What temps are good to run on those? My Phenom II that I'm currently running takes a shit when it gets over 55c usually. That's why I can't run the extra cores unlocked.

Well I had two 2500Ks that hit 5.0GHz around 1.4V.

H80 was faulty so I returned it and got Antec 920. Both cooled fine but H80 was noisy. Intel CPUs are good to 80-90° but for long term health I'd aim for 60s-70s. If I force a fake high temperature load with Prime 95 or something, it will hit around 85° after some time as the ambient water temperature heats up. It never sees past 70° in normal load usage for me. I idle in the 30s-40s.
 
Do you run it with the 5.0Ghz overclock always? Or do you run a lower overclock for daily use? This will be the first serious overclock for me since the processors I've had in the past could barely hit 10% let alone 47% which is what that 5.0Ghz overclock represents.

If you leave the speedstep stuff (EIST and C1E) enabled, it'll automatically downclock when it is idle.

It automatically downclocks to 1.6GHz and around 1V which is the state my computer runs in 90% of the time when I am not gaming.
 
Cool, been a while since i've had a good quality intel processor. Been snowed too long into thinking the amd processors were equal, true what they say. You get what you pay for.

Exactly. You get what you pay for and if there's anything I've learned over the past couple of years - don't cheap out on the motherboard. The board, chipset, and the options they offer are almost as important in overclocking success as the actual potential of the processor.
 
I went with the ASUS Maximus IV Gene-z/Gen3 motherboard. It is a M-atx, but not lacking in features. At a cost of $190 I'm hoping for some good overclocking performance.
