I have a system waiting for a AMD Athlon 2500+ that is supposed to be here thursday (2/19/04). In that system, I have only pc2100 memory. The FSB of the 2500+ is 333mhz, and I might want to raise that to 400mhz to make it a 3200+. I will be upgrading that memory when I get the money. Could I get by with pc2100 memory without underclocking or anything like that?

You could probably OC that pc2100 to match the barton's FSB even.

If not, you can always run a divider to keep your ram nice and low while keeping the barton at 1.830GHz.

sure u can get by, but ur comp will run alot worse. its really worth it to get the ram as soon as u can. just run your ram at 5:4 or whatever it is for 133/166 ram to fsb ratio.

How do you overclock the RAM speed from 266mhz to 333mhz? Is it as easy as overclocking a processor's FSB?

its all in bios. its easy if your ram will actually hit 333mhz. but i bet you will have to loosen up timings for it to work.

well, all i can do is try...

this ram will have to do for a while. The only bad thing about it is that I just wont see the maximum preformance from my CPU, right?

Yes. I am doing it rightnow with my 2500xp. I am using a shuttle an35 and have 1 stick of pc2700 and 1 stick of pc2100 and it works fine. I can't hit 3200xp speeds yet but I have got the chip really really close, think I hit 197mhz fsb, and it was stable but for now I have it running on a 190mhz bus and the memory running at I think 150mhz, not home rightnow to look.

Depends on the type of memory. Some memory will not even go past 134.

The best thing is to sit in front of the computer...and go into the BIOS. Have the manual in front of you, and set the options and dividers as you want. You can start with keeping everything stock and seeing how it goes.
