I'm thinking of OC my 2500+ after almost a year of ownership. I am upgrading the stock HSF to a slk-900a and a Vantec ThermoFlow 92mm fan. It needs better cooling anyway.
Using EP-8RGA+ with one 512mb stick of Corsair Value Select pc-2700. How well will my cpu overclock?
I realize everyone is different, but will it decently overclock with the RAM I am using? Will I need to overclock the RAM? I would like to get to at least 2.2Ghz.
I know the basics of overclocking it. I just need to know if it is possible.

It is possible
I'm guessing that your 2500 is unlocked seeing it's a year old so ram overclocking is not going to be mandatory but your corsair 2700 may do 200 (3200) . Whats the supported fsb on your Epox (haven't used one) I'd go the tried and true and raise your fsb up in 5mhz increments until you incounter stability issues . You may have to increase Ram and or CPU voltages but that's your call ( Risk vs Returns ) . Your performace will be greater at 200x11 than 166x13 so go for that . Do a search for stabiliy testing programs also . (excuse me if you know some of this already)

Although I have not tried it yet, I do have Prime95 installed. I downloaded it a while ago, and don't have any other stability testing programs.

Well, I guess I'll order the parts I need and get crackin' on the OCing.

Any other input appreciated. :)
 
Yeah my m8 he has your board and 190 Mhz fsb was the highest he could get stable without a chipset voltage mod (your results may differ) can't offer to much other advice ( just give it a go), you have a good cpu and good cooling(for OCing) on the way so you should be set :p
edit: maybe some active cooling for the northbridge would help some .(I has a passive cooler if I remember right ??) Also download Memtest86 and test new fsb speeds (bootable floppy or CD) might save you possible HDD corruption ( low chance though ) test 5 seems to be the most picky .

I was thinking, would another 512mb of RAM help any? I was planning on upgrading to a gig anyhow. It wont hinder any overclocking I imagine.
Also, what is a chipset voltage mod? I'm ordering the Zalman chipset heat sink that newegg sells. (stangely enough, the only one they sell) It has to be better than the one on right now. Oh, and newegg is out of stock on the slk-900a, so I'll have to wait for them to get more.

How does raising the mem fsb help in protecting hard drives? Also, I hear the ram fsb should be the same as the cpu? So, really I should overclock the ram to match the overclocked cpu? Or am I way off?

I've tried looking around, but haven't found any good documentation on overclocking RAM, the relationship between RAM and the CPU, or much anything like that. Can somebody throw a link my way, or give some info?

If you wanted to get another 512 mb of RAM and run it dual channel with your other ram, it would help your system out quite a bit. I'm not sure if it would have *that* much difference in overclocking... but you can always give it a shot
 
What I meant was testing the new (higher) fsb speed with a program like memtest can prevent HDD corruption but as I said it's still pretty unlikely . The chipset voltage mod is difficult ( involves soldering) it increases the voltage to the chipset ( Northbridge) which may help you reach a higher fsb . 1GB of memory will help if your a gamer and running in dual channel mode with 2x512mb will improve performance also ( your sticks wont be a matched pair but in my experience they should work fine ) although generally running in dual channel mode limits your memory over clocking compaired to single channel mode but the perfomance gains should offset this .
 
can you do a chipset voltage mod on old revision ultra400s that dont reach 200?

or is it just vdd anyway that can be raised in the bios? is this why you need good nb cooling?
