I'm looking at getting one of these from monoprice for my kb / mouse and possibly joystick, is there anything to consider in terms of drawbacks of having such a long extension? they all seem to be "active"

If you have other devices drawing power from the USB rail, it could saturate the power rail.
Not that likely unless its quite an old motherboard and you have a power hungry device already attached.
They provide no information on how much power it uses, it shouldnt be very much though.

Other than that, it should be ok.
Unless you are a misguided hifi purist with an external USB DAC powered from the same power rail, it could cause a reduction in sound quality.

It being active is to make sure the signal is strong enough to reach the full length, so I wouldnt worry about it working, it should do the job.
I would make sure the USB 5V power is not set to active when the PC is powered off as it will shorten the life of the electronics and potentially anything else attached.
