2405FPW ghosting/trailing

Ok, after playing with my 2405FPW some more, I've noticed very noticeable ghosting (or is it more like trailing?) in games and movies.

As a reference, my Samsung 191t & 910t (both 25ms panels) do not show any of this.

I've tried swapping DVI cables and using VGA input from my notebook -- same result. My desktop has a 6800GT. Again, the other two monitors don't do this, so it's not the video card's fault.

I've contacted Dell to ship me a replacement, but I'm afraid that this is normal for 2405FPWs or something. Is this the case? If so, I can't imagine keeping it, since my older 19" panels don't (comparatively) ghost/trail at all.

BTW, for those of you who are curious, support@dell.com seems to not work anymore:

Your experiencing the normal ghost effect as a result of the 12ms samsung panel that the 2405 uses. I highly doubt you will experience any different with another monitor. You probably have higher standards in regards to screen quality in which case, the 2405FPW is not for you.

Yeah, whatever, especially since my older 25ms panels are subjectively BETTER THAN THE 12ms 2405FPW and don't give me a headache when I'm using them to watch something. I have never complained about ghosting until now.

For everyone else, here's a short video clip of some movie credits scrolling by. It's not exagerrated at all and basically looks like that in real-time. My Samsung panels do not look remotely as bad as this.

I coded up a quick program to test the Overdrive technology latency problem, and as others have pointed out, the 2405FPW definitely lags by a few ms. The two screens should be showing the same thing.

this 2405 shit is starting to get to me. I have one on the way so I cant say anything first hand but there doesnt seem to be many people in the middle. Either the lcd is horrid trash or causes orgasims at startup. I find the lack of credible reciew sites coverage of these 20"+ lcd's disturbing, just once I'd like to see an anandtech roundup with the L2335 AND 2405 in it, but instead I have to read through reviews seperately dated 6+ months apart and try to figure out what to do with my money.

I guess I hope your wrong but either way I'll find out soon :(

Well once you get over its issues, it's awesome. Plus, it brings out my inner dork:

We've discussed this in the large 2405FPW thread, and it seems that it only seems to be noticable when you clone a display and sit the two monitors next to each other.

Tell me, does the lag you perceive affect your gaming or movie watching? If not, maybe you have nothing to worry about?

Check out this lag:

It also affects horizontal stretch mode (that's how I took the picture).

I've been playing X2: The Threat at 2560x1024 and it's not bad at all.

Well bud, I dunno what to tell you then. Get used to it or send it back to Dell so another person can enjoy it

You don't have to tell me anything. From what I've read, your rants about the 2405FPW are pretty worthless.

Thats nice, don't blame me that you jumped on the bandwagon without doing research, I won't be your personal fall boy for your mistakes or misjudgements.

Who got excited and started to jump bandwagons reading about the 2405?: You

Who did or didn't do his research in regards to a product that you may or may not have liked? You

Who took out his credit/debit card, called Dell and ordered a 2405 anyway?: You

Who's the immature child who's blaming someone else for a decision he didn't think deeply enough on and can't hold himself responsible? You

Yep, sure sounds like my fault

I don't see what the issue is. If you don't like it then return it and go buy a different brand 12ms 24" 1920x1200 LCD for 800 bucks.

As a side note; of the 7-8 lcd screens I've ever messed around with the 2405 has had the least amount of ghosting or blurring and that includes a sharp aquos HDTV.

the HP L2335 is suppose to nice, maybe try that out and tell us all how it compares to the 2405. If my 2405 turns out to be the horrid shit that many claim it to be thats what I will be doing.

This is just ridiculous, I replaced my 191t with the 2405fpw also and let me tell you there was more ghosting and trailing on the 191t than I have seen on almost any monitor, it was just bad. The 2405 I have noticed next to no ghosting at all. My only problem with it is I seem to get a lot of frame tearing, but that is a seperate issue and most likely related to my video card running at higher resolutions than I have run before.

THe 2405 has a locked 60hertz at native rez, so if your games are going beyond 60fps, you will get screen tearing, mine gets it all the time but I hate the *30fps* limiting when it drops to low when VSYNC is enabled so I just try to either crank my settings up even more or ignore it.

Just out of curiosity, are you using an Nvidia video card?

It seems like everyone who is getting issues with the cloning demonstration has Nvidia cards.

I was using, briefly, my 2405 with a BenQ FP-737s-D and I noticed no issues whatsoever.

Also, I'm either not able to percieve or do not have the ghosting/trailing issues others are having. I guess I can be blissful in my inability to notice such things or I just got lucky with a good screen.

Who me? yes I am and I simply am unable to see craptastic ghosting that everyone is having a hissy fit about, but then again I may be like you, blissfully unaware and I'll just stay that way.

Ya, im starting to wonder if people see it because they want to see it. I do have to admit my 191t like literally had little trails behind things it was so bad like in C&C it looked like the tanks had smoke trails behind them kinda. However, after using it for 2 years I didn't see it at all and it all just faded away and didn't affect my gaming, still the same ammount of headshots and whatnot I got with my CRT.

I heard that you should enable triple buffering when enabling vsync to avoid the halving FPS issue. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm currently using the 2005fpw with my rig below. I also noticed screen tearing when playing games. So far I tried enabling vsync, triple buffering etc and it all works fine except I get this slight delay when playing games.

Well after a few tweaks, the best solution I came up with is to turn Negative LOD Bias to clamp with vsync and triple buffering off. Haven't seen any screen tearing since :)

I love the theories on we see it because we want to. It's a PVA panel with overdrive... it blurs.. end of story. In some respect it comes off as unfair to Dell. Only reason it's getting bagged on is because it's user base on this forum outweighs other 23" LCD's and up on this forum by probably 10:1. And in the end you can spend a hell of a lot more and at best come away with something only a little bit better. Most cost more and perform worse to boot. (There is a closely priced HP that some are giving the nod). The only "luck" any of you have is that you're not sesitive to it though. Go ahead and live unknowing bliss, that's fine and dandy. I also know there are probably even more people that enjoy the screen because they just do, despite this. But a gigantic LOL to the notion I convinced myself of problems, to the tune that I should probably sell mine, obviously, for a loss. Or that your PVA panel is from mars and doesn't do it. You're asking someone to convince you. Your panel blurs, the guys that snub at their nose at the Dell, don't be jealous of them, theirs blurs too. Maybe a tad less, but costs more so it's moot. Carry on.

If anyone is convincing themselves it's some of the "I don't see it." I just get worrisome of some of the threads cropping up. They want the sharpness and sexiness of an LCD, and the blacks and motion of a CRT, with a one way ticket to dissapointment. Pick your poison gents. And yeah, if one were to describe a Dell 2405FPW as more than not the best but instead "horrid," put the fucking credit card away, DO NOT buy a big LCD. Not now.
