My girlfriend is eagerly awaiting sims 2, and assuming they meet the Sept 17th release date, I need to pick up this card sometime next week. I have 200~ dollars to spend, but i havent had much time to check out what the best bang for the buck is right now. AA and AF arent really much of a concern, but she wants a smooth gaming experience @ 1024*768 on recent games. I prefer Nvidia, but prefer a good deal even more ;). At any rate, any advice would be welcomed...

Some retail outlets are selling the 9800Pro for $199 USD. Im not sure which stores. That would be the best card to buy if you can get it for that price.

newegg.com has a sale going on right now for the Sapphire 9800pro for $197. Sale ends in like 45min though according to the site. But look around you can find them for about that at many places, if not look into the 9600XT

For $200 right this moment, there is no better deal than the 9800 Pro. Forget the 9600 XT (pointless card IMO), forget everything except the 9800 Pro. Though you better crank up the settings higher than that if you get one, I don't think anyone will forgive you if you run it at only 1024 w/noAAnoAF :p

What's the rest of the system look like? There's no sense in putting a $200 vidcard in a P4 1.7 with 128MB of RAM...

Her current setup is an Athlon 1600 / A7V266-E / 512 DDR 2100 but this is all getting swapped in the next month or so, the video card was just first priority (Shes still using a Geforce MX 2, lol : )

As far as the cards go, the 9800 Pro is awesome, and theres an MSI board at a decent price @ ZZF. Thanks for the input guys,

If he prefers Nvidia, what's wrong with the 5900XT for ~$175?
The FX series of cards have poorer pixelshader preformance and low AA quality then the 9800's and such.

I prefer Nvidia too, and if that was my budget. I would probably get a 5900XT for around $180.

At $200, the 9800 Pro is a little bit more powerful in most DX9 games.

But the 5900XT is still a great card & buy at $180.
