i trying to decide which to buy, which do you guys recommend, the 1680x1050 or 1600x1200?

hehe....dead horse...beating...I mean....

j/k :p

You're gonna get votes for both. It's really up to you and what you like better. Myself, I prefer widescreen. People that don't like widescreen will tell you that you are selling yourself short in getting a widescreen monitor because it won't be as tall as a 4:3 monitor of the same size (in terms of inches). I say who cares to that because it doesn't bother me I don't need a taller screen, but to some people it's a big deal.

Whatever one you like better is the best choice :-D

I have been thinking about this myself, and my conclusion was that i feel as though i'll regret not going WS 16:10 A-R. So i might as well. The extra screen real-estate looks really nice and add an extra dimension to games - i have seen it up close on a septre LCD and now i wan't one :D

In my experience:

games, movies, content creation (maya/max/photoshop/macromedia director) => widescreen.

office/internet => 4:3. Many websites are not programmed to center/stretch, and having stuff on the left of a wide screen kinda throws one off.

Programming is a tough call. 1200 lines of resolution could come in handy, but so does the extra space to the side where class trees, etc. can be painlessly allocated. (same with content creation progs and their various panels). Let's call it a draw.

In the end, it's for you do decide. Using WS myself.

I recently had this debate and chose 1600 x 1200. Against Wide is that there are games I have that won't play nice with it and I don't want to stretch them, plus there are too few HDCP monitors out now. In 6 months or so I'm going to buy a 20.1" wide or larger to pair with my Samsung 204B so I'll have the best of both worlds.

i have yet to understand why all the WS fans claim the WS has more "real estate" than a 1600X1200 panel. Do you guys not know multiplication? A 20" WS has slightly less real estate than a 20" 16X120 panel.

Vertically, yes. In terms of area of pixels, yes. But horizontally, no. Depends on which measurement you're talking about.

20" 4:3 because you get the verttaical height and more horizontal real estate then a 19" 4:3 making it close to widescreen.

higher resolution = more fucntional real estate

EX: Just cuz a panel is 30" big, it may have a res of 1024X768.

WS is more for E-Penis than anything imo. A few years down the road i think WS will be more beneficial but for now you sacrifice more than you get in return, especially for gamers.

indeed a 20" panel feels nearly WS when compared to a 19".

Not all real estate is equally useful. IMO, it's more convenient to have extra space to the side, where you can organize things in columns--I find selecting an item from a column faster and more intuitive (maybe it's just how my brain works? I dunno).
