~20 stereo outs from a computer?

I'm trying to set up something for an aquarium in my home town so that they can play sounds to the many exhibits that they have. Long story short, (i had this post already written, but i lost it) their old system is failing.

Can i put four 5.1 channel audio cards into one computer, and have four instances of winamp/foobar open, each playing a 5.1 channel audio file on repeat? This way i've got 6 channels from each card, for a total of 24 stereo channels all set to go to their amps. (We can make our own 5.1 channel audio tracks here.) This would be the perfect solution, but will it work? Is there any better way to play the audio? Using 10 CD players? Using 10 iPod Shuffles? (Insanely expensive, i know.)

Sure, you'd just have to tell each app which device to output to. Might be a PITA to manage, maybe there's a better progam out there with this in mind or maybe a plugin someone knows of?
 
I would think 10 cd players would be the better solution. But I dunno, there is defiantely something cool about throwing a bunch of soundcards into a computer
 
Easier to manage for sure. If you've got them all in the office or whereever you'd have the computer, and all you need them to do is play one looping track, I don't see any reason why not.

Screw the shuffles if you're going that way though, too much trouble for something a CD player will do.
 
A mobo with onboard audio, and a couple of PCI sound cards. i expect its easily done. you may need to juggle the irqs though.
 
10 cd players is so much easier/cheaper...or even 24 of them.
 
You'd need 10 $200 network audio devices to achieve the same end as 4 $25 av-710s, assuming that you've got the audio cable run already. If you don't have them, then it's gonna get expensive. Long radio-shack-type cables probably won't cut it for this.

What speakers are they using? Powered? This is definitely going to be important. An amp with that many channels doesn't exist AFAIK (at least not for under $10k). A bunch of small computer-type speakers might work okay for this; I assume you're not *too* concerned about sound quality...
