Would a system have better performance (in terms of gaming) if four sticks of 256 MB RAM were used than 2 sticks of 512 MB on a dual-channel motherboard ?

2x512 would be better for the same reason as stated above.

On a related note, I'm planning to get myself 4x512 goodness. It'd be 2x1024...but have you seen the price of a 1 GB DDRSDRAM stick? Whoa.

look for the price of that stick in RD-RAM, pc1066. i guarantee you'll shit your pants :p

besides upgradability, you have to think of compatability between the sticks and also reliability of the sticks (4 sticks of ram = 4 sticks that can die on you)

That's why you buy 4 sticks of the same brand from the same company. :D

I doubt buying four sticks of Crucial would give you 4 bad sticks, but at least you have their customer support to back you up.

Also one of the reasons why I'm in the process of selling my twin pack Level II Black Mushkin RAM.
