Ok, I have been asking a lot of questions lately but I have been playing with stuff and have run into many problems.
Here are the issue sI am having with each comp.

Compaq AMD Athlon (1gig), used as my secondary comp:

I had XP on it with no issues.
I harvested the HD from it to put in my main rig for extra storage and put a 10 gig in its place and went to install RH.
Since I pulled the HD my IDE connections won't read.
I figured I had 1 dead one, and was fine with it sinc ethis comp is mainly a FTP/server box.
Now both IDE connections will not read. I was told to get a controller card and use that, but 2 question reguarding it.

1: The cheapest I can find is $30, are there any cheaper?
2: With a controller installed, will the board know to boot from there instaed of lookin on the mainboard?

Compaq AMD k-6 400mhz (my very first comp that I wanted to put linux on and use it just for folding):

1: It only tries to boot from the floppy even though it can bot from CD (I check and the option is enable to CD boot).
When it trys to boot from floppy, it give the NonSystem disk error, even with a basic DOS 6.1 floppy.

2: When a HD with a OS on it is put on the IDE it won't even try to boot.

3: Occational error when it checks the memory (128stick of PC100). It checks and as its checking it says OK, once finished it says there is a memory error, something about the size although I don't remember exactly what it says.

I have no idea what to do, I am at a complete loss.
I am close to the point of taking both of these to a shop but don't wanna spend the money on it since they are wrth that much, but I do want them running.

Please help.

On pc #1 have you tryed clearing the cmos? Make sure the ide cable is inserted properly, and any jumper settings are correct. Make sure its set to auto detect in the bios.

On Pc #2 have you tryed clearing the cmos? Memtimings normal?

Also try disabling the floppy in the bios and see if it still looks for it.

comp #1 - are you positive that the 10 gigs HD you're trying to put in it is not defective? as for the controller card - I suggest ebay :p

comp #2 - you could try booting from different optical drive... as for the ram - memtesting should clarify whether it's defective or not...

computer #1. try different harddrive

computer #2. unplug floppy then give it a go.

computer #3. better not be a compaq ;) ...or a mac

Well, I did forget to clear the Cmos, I will try that tonight.

I don't have another CD to try.
I will change to skip floppy boot.
My main rig is homebuilt. The other 2 was back when I was young :D

The other thing I would try in both cases is to set the drives for cable select rather than master/slave. Compaq/HP are kinda behind the times on this and I have seen where their stuff will only work when set up for CS.

If memory serves you also need an IDE cable capable of doing CS, but that parts kinda fuzzy, so don't hold me to it.
