2.8c overclock, quick voltage question

Ok, currently I have my 2.8c overclocked to high 3.3's, but it tends to crash in prime and give errors in the 3.4's.

In my bios I have the voltage set to auto, and cpu-z reports 1.6v under idle, and roughly 1.5v when under load.

When I set the voltage to 1.6v in the bios, cpu-z reports 1.66v when idle, and roughly 1.58v under load.

What would you recommend to be a safe voltage. I read in previous posts and most ppl say 1.7v is safe, but is this 1.7 when idle, or 1.7 in the bios, meaning upwards to 1.8 idle.

sounds like you need the droop mod for that board. Asus P4 boards are known for drooping the voltage when under load. This is within Intel's specifications, but isn't very good for overclocking though.

Google P4C droop mod and you should get all kinds of hits on it. You can also check xtremesystems.org for plenty of info on that mod.

If your system is stable when idle and mild load, but under heavy load it crashes, chances are the droop mod will help you.

and for the voltage question, I wouldn't go much higher than 1.7v idle/load unless you have good watercooling or VPC. It WILL generate a lot more heat and WILL increase the risk you run of scorching that cpu (SNDS was known to kick in above 1.7v, but I know plenty of people that run 1.7v+ with no probs) I definately wouldn't feed it upwards of 1.8v. You're definately asking for a cripy chip there.
