1U 940 solution

okay, so here's the deal. I need a soultion for a dual 940 rig that fits in a 1U case. specifically this cse. It needs to fit through the PCI slot, as that's the only feasible solution I see to put the pipes through. I need 2 1U Opteron WBs and preferably a huge pump/radiator that I can mount in a 19" chassis and put to the 12CM fan at the top of the rack.

Is this too much work, or should a good 1U heatsink work fine? like the Alpha U81C? it's at a colo facility where the building is always 70F.
 
A 1u heatsink will work just fine, but it'll be quite noisy. As for watercooling, if you really cram it, you can fit everything except the rad in there. For a waterblock, try the Aqua-Computer Cuplex Pro. Only 1.1 cm (roughly .4 inches) high, with the short 6mm ID angled connectors the total height is just short of .9 inches.
 
well, it is a colo facility and it's plenty noisy already. That's not a problem. I'm just wondering about temps. I don't really care for anything 140F or higher. I want ultimate stability, and I see H20 as a great way to make it very well cooled. Maybe it's not as big a deal as I think. After all the room is quite cool all the time.
 
I would go with the Swiftech MCW6k series blocks for a rack mount setup. Any poly topped block can crack and with it in a rack which would be much harder to see any small leak developing I would only trust an all metal block like the Swifties, the problem would be the height since with the barbs its 1.5" tall (.6 for the block and .9 for the barbs) which I believe that the barbs could be cut down to fit in the 1U case. and would contact Swiftech 1st just to make sure it was ok before buying anything.(it is possible they might have something just for that also)

If poly tops breaking was that big of a concern then they wouldn't be the #1 way to get a block. This is not a personal attack, but I think you will find that a vast majority of waterblock users never have any problems with any lexan or poly tops cracking or breaking unless they're treating them poorly.

That being said, those Swiftech blocks are pretty nice, and you might be able to make one with with elbows...however, there are Opteron servers in 1u's all the time, the heatsinks invented will keep them cool enough because that's what they're designed to do. The product wouldn't exist if it didn't do its job.
 
True, but will it do the job well enough for my taste? I know alot of computers are "designed" to run at 60C and that's just a little high for my tastes. Closer to 45-50.

I would say that the problem is common enough that I would not trust a poly top block in that kind of environment.
I would also get 2 pumps in series like the DDC or D4 (both have 50k MTBF) and a rad with 2 fans which should make the whole setup pretty bullet proof. No single failure other than power would cause problems.

well this isn't a personal attack either, but basing poly tops not being a concern on the fact that more people buy em is a pretty week argument...

i mean... how many fords are sold every year... and which president was just re-elected... does the grocery store sell more junk food or vegetables?

the masses have more often then not been very wrong.

i mean... people still go under anasthetics even though 1 in every 1000 doesnt ever wake up again...

it's usually few smallest minority who have the right idea about things....

all of this is In GENERAL though ;-)

the only reason i say this is because i fear the cracking...
