1st Time Case Modder Query...

Well, by looking at my sig I’m sure most of you can tell I need a new computer badly. Maybe more on how I ended up in this predicament at another time. For the time being, however, while I cannot finance building a new system, I thought I would mod my old Gateway G6-300 case. My idea was to strip the case of its shell, i.e. all the plastic covering, and leave nothing but barebones steel. From there I was going to somehow attach a new power button (the button now is part of the shell), and then attach some kind of steel mesh over the side to cover the computers innards, possibly being backed by some acrylic. I’m going for the hardcore minimalist look here, if that’s not obvious. No Christmas lights for this guy. Considering I’m new to case modding entirely, I was just wondering if any of you have done something as ridiculous as this, and if any of you had any feedback on the idea…

The mod you speak of has been done before. That is not neccesarily a bad thing. You shouldn't have too much trouble doing it and it will give you some valuable experience and, most importantly, something to do for a while. ;)

As for the power button, just go down to you local radio shack and pick up a new switch there. Most of the switches they sell there run from $2-$5 and you can get some other neat stuff there too. Don't be suprised if the help knows absolutely nothing about electronics, though. I think they quit hiring intelligent people years ago.

Um, okay... 2-5$ for a simple 0.1 watt momentary switch? WTF? And even if it's something interesting, we europeans usually pay no more than 3 Euros for switches under 20 watts/24vDC...


About the mod: go for it, nothing like an oldskool simplicity mod...
 
Thanks for the link, that steel mesh is exactly what I had in mind when thinking of this mod. Unfortunately I see it’s not a novel idea by a long shot, but by looking at the case galleries via the link given I’m thinking of adding a bit more to it…

I’ll have to check out Radio Shack soon for the switch, as I’m not good with any of that. I’ll have to do some more research on how to get that part of the mod accomplished I guess. The only problem I still have is my wires coming from the case don’t align right with the pins on the motherboard for everything to work. The power works, obviously, but the LED doesn’t. No matter how I tried to align the two it never worked out. I don’t know if it’s an old case and a newer motherboard that’s the problem or what… :mad:

that's depending on the type of switch. a simple toggle is like $2, the more exotic stuff runs closer $5. It's radio shack for fuck's sake, what do you expect? at least they have the stuff in stock. :)

Well, my mom+pop store has everything in store, too. And if not, they get it within 24hrs at no additional charge. <3!

But yeah, I meant more exotic things, like a 6-channel, three-position toggle switch, costs 2.90&#8364; here :p But meh, whatever.
