Well, Ive decided to go the LCD route for college and was looking to pick up a nice 17" monitor. Anyhow, I was looking at the SyncMaster 710T ( http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...=us&l=en&cs=19&category_id=2999&page=external ). At 475$ its pretty damn expensive but it looks like a real nice monitor.

I decided to head over to best buy later today to see what they had and I found a Samsung 712N for $380 after rebates, it has a 12ms response time and 600:1 contrast ratio along w/ a native res of 1280x1024. Looks to be the same monitor to me, only 100$ less. Is there any difference between the two?

One has DVI input and the other does not... Get the Samsung 710T which has the DVI input... Much clearer picture and contrast...
 
The 712N is the retailer's version of the 710N. The only difference between the N and T models is the aforementioned DVI connection.

To many, DVI may seem worthless, but it is nothing to sneeze at. DVI allows for true digital per-pixel coloring, which provides a clearer, truer picture. If you don't want to buy a monitor that is already dated by the lack of such a connection, get the 710T. Getting a DVI connection will increase the monitors longevity and future value, as well as making the picture better. My advice is to grab the 710T if you have the money. If not, the 712N is the best analog monitor you can buy at 17".
 
Ah, thanks so much guys, that makes a big difference. If I am going to shell out $400 for an LCD, it better have DVI so I'm going to try to find a good deal on the 710T. For some reason I thought they would all have DVI lol (Shows how little I know). Thanks again.

I'm looking at the same deals. This week at Best Buy (August 8th - 14th 2004) they have the 712N on sale for 379.99 after Mail-In Rebates.


Does this sound like a Hot Deal?

If it was the 710t it would be a hot deal for sure, but its not such a hot deal IMO for the 712N.


Btw, little update - I ended up ordering the 710t off newegg... should arrive shortly. :D
