I recently build a new computer for myself, and I decided to go with the WD1500 for the hard drive. However, after formatting and installation of Windows XP, on the second reboot, the drive made a click sound, and then sounded like it was releasing air from inside it. After these sounds, all hard drive access stopped, and the computer would freeze at the Windows XP splash screen. After trying many different things, I put my old hard drive back into the system (a WD1200 Caviar drive), and haven't had any issues with the machine since. I recently got in the new drive (I sent the raptor back for RMA), but this one seems to be doing the exact same thing as the first one. I'm becoming a bit concerned about this problem, since this is the second drive that I've gotten that seems to have this issue. Does anyone have any idea? Thank you in advance.
 
And power supply? Raptors use a bit more juice than other drives. Normally, this is such a small amount that you would be experiencing stability issues even without it, but I just thought I'd mention it.
 
I sent the drive right back to Newegg.com, so I haven't tried to contact WD directly yet. As far as cooling, there is a single 120mm fan directly in front of the drive, blowing onto it, so I doubt that drive cooling is an issue. My power supply is a new 600W OCZ PowerStream unit, but I'm not sure if that could be the issue or not.
 
Aah. Found yer problem. Newegg shipped it. I've heard lots of horror stories about drives arriving DOA thanks to their shipping practices.
 
I have bought several hard drives from Newegg in the past and have never had a problem with them. I just find it strange that two drives would have the have the same problem; making the same sound, at the same time in the boot cycle. I'm just not sure what to try next...
 
Well, what I would normally do in this situation is start replacing components until it stops freaking out. You've replaced the drive, now try the cable, try the drive in a different SATA port, then try the drive in another computer. If it works in the other machine, find out why. Swap parts between the two machines until you find out what went bad, and replace it. Granted, it will take a long time if you have to keep RMA-ing drives, but it's one way to find out for sure.

Another option would be to install XP on your 120GB, and use WD's drive utilities to check the smart status of the raptor. If it fails some sort of smart test, it may offer some advice as to what's goin' on.
