I have found this resolution talked about many times and I'm wondering why LCDs and why so many things use it. It's a 5:4 aspect ratio, when the normal aspect ratio for a CRT is 4:3. For an LCD I see them in this size and I wonder why since it departs from the "standard" of 4:3 and even 16:9.

Sus, I had for a year or so a 19" LCD 1280x1024. A Dell 1900FP.
I paid $1170 dlvd. (Not cheap way back then, huh?) I was well satisfied, superb pic.
But like you, I never did like its Aspect Ratio of 5:4. A 5;4 monitor is almost a square box.
Sure the 5 width is more than the 4 Height, but still it's kinda "boxy".
Late last fall I went to a 21.3" 1600x1200 LCD. Ah, that's much better !.
A 4-width is noticeably-more than a 3 height. It's a wide rectangle. Love it.
My next (and last one) might prolly be the new 23" 16ms 1920x1200 LCD from Benq.
Benq just answered a guy's e-mail question. They told him it's shipping next month. Price not yet set.
Wow. 16:9 aspect ratio. 16 wide x 9 high is a real w-i-d-e rectangle.
Yeah, the happy dudes who game on those beauties will be gaming in real WIDESCREEN Country.

1280x1024 is probably used a lot because it's all around good for most things. You get a little bit more room than 1024x768. Most games support it, and text is not too small and unreadable for some people like it might be at 1600x1200. Also, video cards are less likely to run slow at 1280x1024.
