Basically my friend is looking to spend $1000 to $1200 on a nice LCD in the 36" to 37" range. Neither he nor I know much at all about brands or features. Only requirements are either VGA or DVI, and the ability to play cable. So, any suggestions?

sounds like you're looking for the westinghouse 37w3

you'll need a cable box to play cable I believe...

only get the westy if you want

great pricure
perfect resolution for its size
no dead pixels
tons of input/outputs
1080p--the best out there
bragging rights :)

don't get it if you

watch cartoons all day :D
have a weak video card

I also say get the westy. No idea how the above poster is going to say "no dead pixels" though. That's out of westinghouses' hand..

yeah get the westy.. and i own it and it is the nicest lcd ive ever seen

Try to get a dell 30"

The Dell 30 inch Monitor does not have an internal scaler. So it can only accept the resolution of 2560x1600 (I believe this is the correct res) and half of that, which I believe is 1280x800. So you can not hook up a cable box to this monitor, now using a TV Tuner Card may be a different story, but I am not sure how much or difficult it would be to find one that supports HD . Or for that matter, if they even exist for the mass consumer market yet....

I would recommend the 37 inch Westy, with the money you have, your size needs in mind as well, that is going to be the best bang for your buck, and won't go over your friend's budget.

If you have access to a cable box, or can buy a $80 tv tuner card then definitely Westinghouse 37"

This LCD is a monitor, not a tv, so it has no built in tuner.

I wish I had $1,200 to spend on something I know absolutely nothing about.

You are correct. I forgot about the need for cable. The Westy 37" is a great buy then, aslong as you have a cable box.
