I want to use a cigerette lighter hooked up to my computer to power my cell phone car charger.

I could do it the regular way by tapping into the 12 volt line and the ground line on my power supply, but i dont want to cut into my power supply wires, and i dont have the right molex end to just plug it in to my power supply.

I was wondering if i could get the power through usb? I have seen different lights and fans that plug into the usb port and get their power through it.

Just some ideas, anyone know if the usb will work though?

...you'll toast your USB port with a cig lighter; WAAAY to much current for the USB connection.

Cut 'n' splice into the +12 inside the case = best answer.

Yeah if you don't wanna cut into your wires just go ahead and buy one of the lighters from many pc mod sites

Yeah, i didnt think the usb would be able to do it. I dont really want to buy a kit, because i already have the stuff.

I think i'll cut and splice then use heatshrink over it so i dont have to worry about anything touching the case or coming apart.

Does anyone know about how much power the car charger will draw from my power supply?

I have an allied 400 watt

Go to a computer store and pick up one of those 3-4 pin adapters, most places will(in my experience) give 'em out for free, but you might have to pay a couple bucks. From there, ditch the rpm sensing wire, and splice in the adapter from canadian tire or wherever for the cig. lighter. The amount of current draw will depend on what you plug into it. Your phone charger should say right on it.

Already got it done, it looks and works great. Possible pics this weekend.

I had an old case fan that wasnt any good so i used the cord that was connected to a molex.

Charges the phones perfect, doesnt seem like it pulls too much power.

:D
