While playing FO4 last night, I had GPUz open up on my second monitor. I noticed VRM 1 was up around 102°C, and #2 was hanging around 99°C. Ive never seen them this high before. Card isn't OC at all. XFX r9 280x DD BE. Cooler has been replaced with the Arctic AX7970. Card wasn't throttling down from 1000/1500 and game was smooth as can be. 99% load.
I have the lower side fan blowing between the two cards.
Think this may be a glitch on gpuz? Only running single card because multi-card is busted in FO4. No .ini tweaks. I don't know if this is new or not as I haven't had gpuz running except for the first few minutes I played the game to see if Crossfire was working.

Did you apply the VRM heatsinks? I had to mod my original cooler on my 290 to use the base plate from the original heatsink, covering all of the VRMs etc to get better VRM cooling.
 
Yeah, I used them. I double checked that they were still in place.
 
I have that same card...well the none black edition flashed to the black edition that is...I could swear mine tops out around 90 even overclocked to 1100mhz with the stock cooler. I dont think 102 is anything to panic about but that does seem a tad high...ill check mine with bf today and see how high it gets

Mine doesn't get anywhere near that in bf4. Then again, it doesn't get 100%usage on it either when in crossfire.
 
A lot of VRMs are good to 125°C. I guess you could try to look up the exact specs of the VRMs on your card to see what its rated max temperature is, but I doubt you need to worry about 102°C.
 
102C is kinda high, shouldn't be in dangerous territory yet though. Increase fan speed to see if temps go down.
 
You could try puling side panel off an maybe even put a small fan blowing....you know just to rule out air flow issues....just tested bf4 and it topped at 65 lol

Already have a fan blowing there. Yeah, bf4 doesn't hurt temps at all.

Used the thermal glue stuff that came with the cooler.

No custom fan curves. This thing already runs pretty quietly. It rarely goes above 70% fan speed
 
welcome to the 7970/280x.... They run hot. This include the VRMs. The card can take it. You're fine.
 
I definitely agree with warrior.....running (2) of these in cf.....especially at 100% its a lot of heat to dissipate and is going to be hotter than just one. Can you imagine (2) 390x's running 100% for hours? Its got to be like a space heater lol
 
Mine are rated by the OEM manufacturer to run @ 120 C on my XFX 390X. No worries.

They don't run 100% when in cf. In FO4, only one runs because multi-gpu doesnt work.
When in cf in other games (bf4 for instance), they only run <95%. Not sure why though. Not a big deal on that.
 
Heh, with old ATI HD4870/HD4890 VRM's running at 100C and over was perfectly normal especially when overclocked and using stock coolers and running Furmark. But it did not reach those levels during normal gameplay. I think this is the case with newer AMD cards too. Maybe you missed a VRM chip somewhere and its running bare without heatsink? They are very small clusters of chips afterall.
