It would take alot more than 10 hard drives, seeing as most hard drives take 10-12watts max. I have a raid 5 array of 12 disks, with a single opteron and 2gb of ram, the entire system (including power supply inefficiency loss) only takes 265w.

I have 7 (1X80GB, 6X250GB) 7200rpm Hard drives powered by a measly Enermax EG565P-VE 535W power supply. My 2500XP-M @3200 is Prime95 stable @1.55vdc with all my fans turned down.

Hmmm, it pulls 1400W from the wall when producing 1000W of output DC. That's a lot of heat to remove.
 
For one of our projects at work, we were thinking of getting Cisco 6500 series switches equipped with not one but two 6,000 W PSUs. :eek:

We wound up gettting dual 3 kW PSUs instead. :(

actually for spinup they are more like 2A per drive (typical) which is double that (24 watts) but then your not powering the real heavy hitters at that point and once spinning they drop to a quarter of that (0.5A 6W) again on average and slightly higher with a seek (moving the aremature)

and of course in most (large parity) RAID arrays these days a delayed or staggered spinup of the drives is available
generally always has been in SCSI now pretty common in ATA
