GPU: EVGA 7800GT - $300 after $20 mail-in rebate
DVD burner: lite-on - $40
Hard Drive - do you need one? should be less than $100 for a good one. my friend got a 300gb 16mb cache sata drive for $70 recently

if you need a monitor, this leaves roughly $200 for a monitor, which should be able to get you a decent 19" lcd monitor nowadays (if you need a monitor)
or, you could upgrade to 2x1gb patriot ram for an additional $85-ish, replacing the current 2x512. or upgrade to a evga 7800gtx for $160 more. or upgrade the processor to a x2 3800+ (or opteron 165 if you can find one, dave doesn't have any plus they're getting price gouged now) for around $150 more, or $200 for the opteron, or get some hard drives, get a nice pair of speakres or headphones, or just save the extra budget.

Id have to suggest going with 2gb of ram. 2x1g OCZ 2-3-2-5 sticks. The affects of 2GB of ram over 1GB in BF2, is amazing. Im sure it will impact other games, Ive just really noticed it in BF2 when I put my other gig in.
I wouldn't get a Lite-On, they're normally pretty loud. Otherwise, nice suggestions.
Quick question, kinda off topic, why are Opterons getting so much attention right now? What do they have over the normal A64s? This is probably a stupid question, but I have to know.

is the motherboard that comes with the evga mobo/7800gt combo a matx board? cuz if not, well this is for a qpack build. i suggested lite-on merely because it'll be guaranteed to fit with the psu, samsung should also work, too, or some other brands, but im not entirely sure which others fit.
as for wanting to go dual core, i'd say if you want to go dual core, your upgrade path should be like this:
get what i have listed, but with the X2 instead of the opty. im gonna guesstimate a hd will bring the overall price before x2 upgrade to $850, and the x2 will bring it to $1k. that's before shipping and tax though, so you'll still be going like 50-100 over your budget. for ram, get 2x512 to start, and when you have the money and want to upgrade, drop in another 2x512. that's the beauty of the tforce chipset; their mobos all have 4 DIMM slots. you'll be reduced to running at 2T, but there isn't any noticeable real-world difference, though there'll be a bit of benching difference. eclipse has a thread on it somewhere; when you're not depending heavily on the cpu (i.e. games), then it'll have pretty much no impact running 2T vs 1T.

I built the system in my sig for around $850 but already had an hdd and optical drive, so adding those 2 would put it right at a grand. I'm not sure how good the board is for overclocking, but I got 2.4ghz out of it with memory at it's full rated speed, 2.5ghz by turning the memory and htt way down in speed. It was faster at 2.4ghz and I didn't have to bump the voltage up much, so I think it's the board limiting me to that as opposed to the chip. Overclocked temps using the stock cooing with fans all the way up was only 35C idle, 50C with both cores at 100%. At stock speed I get those temps with the fans at idle, all you can hear are the hard drive and once you game for a bit the vid card fan speeds up. If you're only going to do gaming, I would go for a single core and 7800GT. I thought temps would be an issue going in and didn't plan to o/c much, but the cooling system works well enough to support a decent o/c, and is probably limited more by the board than anything else.
