10" or less displays...?

I've got a small form factor home server setup, that I have in a small area of my Den. What I'd love, is a small form factor display, something on the order of 10" or smaller (7") akin to what's on these latest Netbooks for a display (1024x600, 800x600, etc.)...

Why? All I generally need is just quick maintenance/boot type information, and normally it'd be off. Plus the small nature would mean it wouldn't take much (if any) desk space (coupled with a mini keyboard).

Does anyone know of any that would work with VGA/DVI? I've seen some of these new USB secondary displays coming about, but these won't work during initial boot. I haven't had much luck searching around local shops, and it's seemingly hard to search for this online...

Any suggestions?

Ya, ebay and ebay motors. You can sometimes find ok prices on 8" LCD's with a VGA input.

Try searching for "lilliput" then sort your results by price. Lilliputs are slightly pricey but some of the less-expensive knockoffs are pretty good and have VGA (forget their names).

Ebay has these small monitors tucked away in different sections so it can take a while to dig them all up.

You can often find the best prices on 15" lcd's though, have you considered a 15" lcd with a deskmount or wallmount perhaps?

15" is almost as large as the entire system. I had considered it, and might end up having to if I can't find anything smaller, but was hoping for something in the 7-10" range. There seems to be a few manufacturers making touch-panel and vehicular type displays, but those seem to be either mounted in some time of DIN frame (slide out or mechanical) or want ridiculous prices for what are effectively commodity components...

Ebay atm seems to be the only place to find these items, but I *loathe* to use their services. It's hard to tell who is really reliable or who's just faked their ratings...

In the original post the OP stated he didn't want a USB display.

Correct. A USB display isn't going to work in this case, since I'd need it to:

A. Be recognized by the video card as a valid display during reboots/startup. Some systems won't boot without a display attached (this is not a headless designed server).

B. POST and other information is inaccessible from a USB type display, due to the nature of the method USB is being used as a fake video buffer.

I'm looking for a VGA/DVI capable small-form-factor monitor... that isn't some one-off industrial prototype that costs $1,499 and sold to large-equipment mfgs.

Hell, I'd even go for some custom LVDS panel system if it was cheap enough...(problem is LVDS panel controllers tend to go for $300 by themselves)...

Thanks cyant! That's probably the closest response to my original question I've seen yet. It looks like it might work, but... ouch.. $338? Hmm... one 7" display, or 3x15" displays...

I figured since the display is *smaller* and costs the mfg less to produce (can you say $30 photo frame?) it'd be a bit cheaper. I guess I was sadly mistaken....

OP did you check out the 14" monitors i linked via private message, the one 14" seems to have a narrow bezel and small footprint altogether...SJ

Yeah the tray holding the LCD is motorized and slide back in the "bay" with the push of a button, they don't manufacture many so they don't save on scale, the resolution is pretty high for a screen this size so i'm not usre how it compare to digital picture frames and well it's a touch screen so that probably all add to the cost.
