Alright here's my setup:

Motorola Surfboard SB5100 Cable Modem

to

Linksys WRT54G-TM

to

8 Port 10/100 Switch

and then a variety of computers with 1000 mbps and 100 mbps

If I replace the 8 port 10/100 switch with a 16 port 10/100/1000 will the 1GB auto negotiate to 100 mbps for all desktops?

And would there be any advantage to using a 10/100/1000 in a LAN Party type environment?

If you have gigabit connections for your PC's and do file transfers, it will make a significant difference. Other wise, no its not going to speed up your browsing speed, download speed, ect.

And I'm guessing latency wouldn't be affected by a network running at 100 mbps vs 1000 mbps?

I second getting a gigabit switch and in your situation latency would not be affected.

No, if you have a gigabit switch connected to a gigabit NIC, then it'll negotiate 1000 Mb/s, not 100 Mb/s, regardless of what the other ports are linked at.

Wow I should not have been posting that late at night.
A good- let me reinforce that (there was a short run of low end dlink/other crappy switches that auto'd down to 100mb if a 100mb connection was present on the switch.) A good gigabit switch will autonegotiate every port, providing gig connections and 10/100 connections accross the board.

Netgear metal box switches are tough as hell, quite, and run nice & cool. I have 3 installed at a plant nursery, 24/7 operation in up to 130 degree heat. Only had to restart them once in 3 years.
