I was recently cracking my own password with LC5 and I used my desktop and laptop to crack the same file. Desktop specs in sig and laptop is running Pentium 1.5M, PC2700 RAM 2x512MB and a 5400rpm HDD.

The laptop top 5hrs to crack the password and the desktop took 1d14hrs.

My question is why is the laptop so much faster? I checked the task manager and both were running at 100% and not much RAM was used, so I think its basically CPU VS CPU.

Is the Pentium 4 Northwood inefficient in raw computing?
 
The reason is that the Dothan is the greatest thing that Intel has ever made.

When the thing is overclocked to about 2.53GHz, it kills FX-55's. It's basically a Pentium 3 on steroids and has a great IPC.

Though the time difference shouldnt be that big...
 
The AMD K7 / K8 and Intel P6 / PM cores are ridicously better at number crunching than the P4 Netburst core. This is due to the much higher Instructions Per Second these CPUs can do compaired to the P4
 
It could be dumb luck, it really could just be that the lappy happened to try the right code after 5 hours, and the desktop took a day. Theres nothing to say they checked them in the same order. Cracking passwords doesnt take a fixed number of cycles, you just try keys till it gets the right one.

That's true.


The best way I would think to compare their raw number crunching power would be to have them each do a SuperPi 32M.

The thing is LC5 show the estimated time for cracking and they were both pretty spot on. But I will try SuperPI because its just wierd.
 
if you were cracking the password on a character by character basis then thats very odd. Although Donathons as mentioned above are very impressive cpus but I cant see the difference being that big

if your using a word list, then i beleive its random, so itd be all luck
