Doom ]I[ scores 94% in latest issue of PC gamer

They took off points for lame humor?

Highs: Extraordinary graphics and sound; incredible tension, atmosphere, and mayhem.

Lows: Some stabs at humor fall a bit flat.

Bottom Line: Just as we'd hoped, it's a non-stop ride of tension, carnage and terror. A new classic.

Can someone scan some other part of the article or the mag? I still think this is a sham.

Guess what: It could be like playing Daikatana v.2.0 and they'd give it a high score because the box, manual, and cds say Doom 3 and ID.

Oh crap I have to get that issue. Did you see they've included an in-depth tech guide to get my PC Doom 3 ready !!!!

;)

anyone else wonder WHY A SEPTEMBER issue would be out in the middle of JULY?
i highly doubt this issue has hit stands yet.

I subscribe to PC Gamer and I'm sure they didn't rig their scoring there *fanboy*. Well, I've noticed that PC Gamer has been releasing magazines even more earlier and earlier by every issue. I don't know what's up with that really.

It looks like its an inside copy--not yet released to the public. On a side note, is doom 3 going to support ps3.0?

Because ALL mags are released early? I already have my August issue of CPU and I think the August issue of PCG.

haha, I cant't wait for this game to be released. Not only will it be a good game (hopefully), there will be over 100 threads on the [H] about the damn game. "My hardware can't..., I hate..., I love..., why doesnt...., anyone got a crack.....

Cant wait! /end rant

Haha that is true. Maybe the H needs to make an Official thread for HL2 and Doom 3 whenthe games are released, separate from each other of course. As for the game, I can't wait either, but I am going to have to wait for that computer upgrade I've been thinking about. Hey do you think that it will run on....:p Anyway, sounds good so far, sounds like it has a really scary atmosphere which is what I was really hoping for (not to mention awesome graphics) hopefully it will give me that same feeling that I got when I played the first 2 back in the old days. :D I like this IGN quote:
...we're hopeful that the team's focus on content and polish will pay off once the title ships in the next few weeks...if it does...which we're not necessarily saying it will...even though we kinda are...even though it's unconfirmed...but all signs point to yes.
So here is to being hopeful. :p

do people go into the future with time machines and get these magazines? i mean september issue in july? can someone go october or wherever the hl2 one is and retrieve the halfilfe2 review? thx

i doubt they implemented any ps3.0 features

Hmm is an OpenGL game going to support directX shader model 3.0... lets see here...

It all really depends what carmack left availiable to doom3 "material" files. There could be some ps2.0 and ps3.0 features. But im sure it would take some doing to get them in there.

Well while I posted, might as well point out that most game mag reviewer's cant tell a great game from a hole in the ground. (I believe they gave quake1 a 80 something and complained about multiplayer of all things.)

seems weird that offical reviews are out but an official date has yet to be announced

you missed the point. the mag is out 2 months early? i can believe an august issue in july. a release one month ahead is typical. who knows why they dont just say its the july issue when its released in freaking july. but releaseing a mag 2 months ahead? c'mon, thats just plain stupid. perhaps they need a freaking calender to know what month it is.

the game has been over hyped by the communtiy and well be a let down for most (could say the same for HL2)

The only thing that would seriously let me down is if it's really short. Like 10 hours or less.
Although someone on this boards was saying it's supposed to be 30-40 hours ? That would be awesome.

Here is some info from the mag (from futuremark forums):

Yeah, I was lucky enough to receive my copy today, so I'll share it with you guys.

1. 6800 is a tad faster than X800 cards. Both run it in full glory

2. The game has four render paths: NV10, NV20, R200, and ARB2. All paths look awesome, even down to a g4mx, but the ARB2 path is the "full package," and is used for the R300+ and Geforce FX+ cards. It does all it's fancy shit in one pass.

3. PCI Express enhances NOTHING.

4. The difference between a 128mb and 256mb card is that the former uses compressed textures whereas the latter only compresses diffuse and specualr maps. In another words, no big deal. However, a 500mb card is needed to run the game in Ultra Quality mode.

5. 512MB is the ideal system total memory. 384 is required, 1GB is nice, but the difference is negligible.

6. Nothing special is included for a 64-bit OS.

7. A 1.5 Ghz processor is the least recommended, but a 2Ghz and above will help since...

8...The sound engine is entirely CPU dependant. Therefore a crappy soundcard works flawlessly. Not to worry, the enfine only uses a "small percentage of cycles, much less than if the engine relied on a soundcard.

9. The only reccommendation regarding faster framerates is to disable to "advanced special effects option." In other words, upgrade if you have problems.

10. They tie it up by providing three levels of "Doom lovin' PC's"

Low-End:
1.5GhzP4 or equivalent
512MB Ram
Geforce4 Ti 4800 or Radeon 9500

Mid-Range:
2.4GhzP4 or equivalent
1GB RAM
Geforce5950 or Radeon 9800 Pro/XT

High_End: Aka Hardware that doesn't exist, but best guess anyway
3.4GhzP4 or AMD equivalent
2GB RAM
GeForce 6800 Ultra or Radeon X800 XT PE.

In conclusion, the game will run well on a variety of hardware, and Rob Duffy, the lead programmer, says that the game looks real good no matter what, and that it will continue to look better as hardware improves. Like all previous id engines, we'll be playing games based on D3 for another five years down the road.

Enjoy everybody!

Well sounds good to me!

To all of the questions as to whether or not the Sept. issue of PC Gamer could already be out; well yes it could. I have a subscription to PC Gamer and the magazine routinely comes around the 20th of every month. Sometimes a few days earlier than that. So, the Sept. issue should be already done and ready to be sent out to subscribers. The stands usually get the magazines a week or two after the subscribers.

Doom3 is ready.

Sweet! I cant wait but this was strange...

If its no big deal between 128mb and 256mb how will 512mb card make a difference?, oh well I didnt test it. In anycase the new gaming experience is upon us ladies. DOOMIII, Stalker and HL2 , pinch me. :)

Id games are programmed solid and tweaked to the core. I think it'll run very well on most peoples' systems around here.

Am I the only one that's equally if not more excited about the KOTOR 2 preview on the cover of that mag? *puts on flamesuit*

Alright a video cards memory mainly holds texture information, a 128mb card has to compress all textures just to get it all to fit into 128mb, (if you run out of video card ram, the game must use system ram which is quite a perf hit) You probably wouldnt notice a compressed texture from a normal texture without really trying.

a 256mb card can hold all texture information but must compress diffuse and specular maps, these things if you looked at em in adobe are just the same texture but oddly colored. They deal with how light interacts with the texture, specular will cause some hard shadows and a diffuse map will spread the light throughout the room a bit. Compressing these might make the room look a little different lighting wise / remove small details, depending on how they are compressed.

a 512mb card wouldnt need to compress a thing.

Flame me if I got any of that wrong =)
