I'm not a security expert but doesn't this sound a bit counterproductive? Demanding backdoors in Tor, or outright banning the software, doesn't make much sense either.

Among other things, police want to ban public WiFi during states of emergency, "because of the difficulty of identifying people connected to it," said one official. Law enforcement also wants the Tor network banned completely in France and would force companies that make VoIP applications (like Skype) to hand the encryption keys to police.

Looks like France is trying to do their own little patriot act just to create a french snowden in a couple years.

I don't think this will solve the terrorist problem!

we used to have a very limited policy of doing this on military bases, but it was solely to not have people taking images of dead soldiers or reporting names before damage control/assessment could be done, and families be notified if somebody was killed.

doing this to the public is asinine.

Yup, like having a key to the front door after being robbed through the window.

Terrorize people and they'll throw away their freedoms without a second thought, just like we did.

It doesn't make sense unless you think the French Police and Security Forces want to force all traffic through Cell Networks where they may have some serious intercept and surveillance capabilities running. Then it makes complete sense from their point of view.

France has turned into a s... hole. It is a sick country beyond help. Move on, people.

In some ways I find it hard to fault them. WW2 wasn't a good time for France. It's been romanticized a lot, like with the French Resistance and all, but it was really a terrible time. I don't think any of us would be happy reliving it ourselves. I think that had something to do with France leaning towards socialism and trying not to piss off the Soviets during the cold war. Sure we gave them a hard time about it, they didn't want to stand up and give Russia the big finger with the others, even with the US behind them. Still, I can understand their being pussies about it all. Hey, it wasn't my country that was going to get hit with chemical weapons and tac nucs so it's easy for me to judge right?

Still, I can't say they haven't earned what they have either.

Literally the first thing I thought when I learned about the recent attack: "yup, expected it happen earlier". Don't push the near/middle east when you're not Russia/England/US. It's going to hurt. And hurt it did.

Those exact same attacks could happen anywhere. You can't defend every location from unknown terrorists.

I dont see terror attacks in Chile, or any other nation that doesnt stick its d''k in other people's business (Iraq, Libya etc)

My first thought if I'm in a hostage situation don't you want to use Wifi/data plan if available to ask for help and or interact with the Police?
