Even if you’re not particularly interested in how cities are evolving, the animation of Wired’s latest cover story is cool to look at.

In this year’s design issue, we’re telling the stories of some of those projects, from the detail of a new streetlight to a sacred city in flux, from masterful museums to infrastructure made for bikes (and the algorithms that run it all). The cities of tomorrow might still self-assemble haltingly, but done right, the process won’t be accidental. A city shouldn’t just happen anymore. Every block, every building, every brick represents innumerable decisions. Decide well, and cities are magic.

Their highlighting of Mecca is a tad unfortunate given recent events..

I love how other cities have a few ground breaking changes that will actually change the city, and Shanghai is like "We'll build a spiral staircase for our museums."

This is America's future and not that Utopian fantasy.

Nah, we still have building codes and local governments need their kick back (aka permit fees). If anything we'll go more vertical and it might represent more of old Soviet era neighborhoods where apartments/tenements rule the landscape. Having lived in this area my whole life I definitely see the way things have changed, even those who want that American dream of a house and yard, you'll pay through the nose, and your house won't be that big and your yard will be a tiny fraction of what they used to be in the area.

I stopped reading as soon as saw LA listed in the number 1 position.

LA is broke, they have more potholes per mile than almost any other city, yet they keep spending money on whatever the current fad is. The Downtown area may look ok, but there are to many crime infested area around it.

I try to avoid LA as much as possible, which luckily means only once or twice a year.

That's why we all drive Range Rovers. Don't hate because you can't assimilate into our lifestyle because you lack style.

Seriously though, potholes suck major ass, but all things considered, it's not bad living in one of the measurably largest major cities in the world, given all the geographic and cultural diversity that can be had within 90 miles of the city's epicenter.

We have a shitload of roads to maintain, and no one wants to foot the bill, but we can go skiing AND surfing in January.

According to google image search it is Mumbai, India. And it is was right.

I tried image search but it gave me nada. Then again, I never search for an image unless it's for purely pornographic reasons, so maybe my google search was "customized" differently than yours.

Either way, this landscape looks straight out of a video game. I mean, seriously, I don't see any evidence of any type of sewage system. Or maybe I'm looking at this with first-world eyes.
