Pretty neat. An idea for a more functional "ball" portion would be a simple inflatable beachball sprayed in plastidip for traction and a smooth appearance with a battery powered pump suspended in the middle that can inflate and deflate the ball slightly on demand with wireless control.
That way it could have a more stable low speed mode with less inflation, and then a high speed mode where its at maximum inflation and hard as a rock for less rolling resistance. At lower speed, the slightly deflated ball would also provide a bit more traction since it would have a bigger surface area both to the ground and the balancing bot's wheels on top.
