Intel Announces New Paid Bonding Leave Program for Parents

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced a new paid bonding leave program to enhance Intel’s existing pregnancy and bonding programs. New moms and dads can now enjoy 8 weeks paid time off with their family. This is in addition to our existing pregnancy leave program that allows new moms fully paid time off generally for up to 13 weeks. Leave can be taken any time within 12 months of a child’s birth, adoption or foster care placement. This enables Intel families to more easily take this important time with their children and reinforces our commitment to an inclusive workforce.

Here in Canada, all (employed) mothers get 15 weeks maternity, and the parents can split an additional 35 weeks parental between them as they wish. There are guarantees that they will have a job to come back to (if they were full time permanent employees to start with).

It is part of the employment insurance program, so they only get 55% of their normal salary (up to a smallish cap), but most good employers will top that up at least during the maternity part.

wow that's just crazy. last two jobs I've had here if i missed 12 weeks of work for any reason at all i forfeit my job. for example if i take 2 weeks vacation and 2 weeks of personal time.. i can miss 8 more weeks during the year. In fact it happened to the one guy i replaced. Depending on the situation i could possibly get my job back but it would start low level again.

I am on of those "odd" people who feel if you don't work you shouldn't get paid though so I find the above employers fairly acceptable.
 
Good on them, I know many who like taking advantage of this.

Myself, meh I wanted out of the house going to work was a break. I can't stay home all the time for weeks on end, I start going crazy.

Well I think that if you have a great employee team then you can usually work around someone not being there for a sickness. When you treat your employees well then they are more relaxed, less stressed, and do an overall better job especially in a team environment. Of course there are deadlines and quotas to meet. But it seems that making your employees happy at work, which in turn allows their home life to blossom, definitely works in the company's favor.

I remember my dad having to be escorted off the company property because something came up at work in the middle of his vacation. Naturally he heard about it and showed up to fix the issue because he loved his job. His boss was like we can handle it and told him to go back home. This clicked in my dad's head that this meant he was replaceable, when in fact his boss was ensuring that he got plenty of rest so that he could do a better job when he came off vacation.

But I do agree with you in general. But if you get sick it shouldn't be the end of your employment. I guess the real question is what is an acceptable time frame for your return before you're let go.
 
When I interviewed for the job prior to this one, the hiring manager was frank with me that he had concerns about hiring me since he knew my wife had just given birth to twins. He said he wasn't interested in adding team members that had any "personal distractions".

I know it's not quite the same thing, but it's good to see any company embrace their employees family health.
