A team of engineers from the Intel Services group placed first at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2014 hackathon for an application they created called Shower with Friends. Built using an Intel® Galileo Gen 2 development board, the Intel team turned their attention to water conservation, creating a fun way for friends to compare their actual water usage. The app makes use of sensors connected to home water lines and social networking to encourage people to change their water usage behavior. Using the app, people can time their showers and receive text messages about their usage. Information collected by the application can be shared with friends to compare and determine who took the shortest shower, thus conserving the most water.

We are having some issued this morning due to a hardware failure last night, so the links back to the direct news story are not functioning right now. All news stories are on the HardOCP news page.

HAHAHA... This is retarded.

How about this... I will just stop taking showers. That ought to conserve a lot of water AND keep people away from me.

Plus, the "shortest shower" figure would only be accurate if all buildings had the same exact size water pipes, same faucets, same shower heads... actually, the pipe length and turns would have to be the same exact as well.

The water pressure regulators would have to be set the same exact as well as well as have the same exact water meters.

You would also need to make sure that nobody else connected to the same pumping station was using water at the same time you are taking a shower, much less making sure nobody else in your house is using the water at the same time you are taking a shower.

Yes, I am going way overboard on this, but they need to think through their stupid devices/applications before implementing them.

The only real way to get an accurate reading is to use meters that are calibrated exactly the same AND have them only hooked up to the lines going to the shower.

It is still a retarded as all get out idea.

Who can forsee the FAKE environmentalists wanting to get these installed in every building and then wanting to limit water usage so we don't use up all the water?

You can't honestly be saying that maximizing the efficiency of the use of something as critical as water is bad? Are these FAKE environmentalists now making up FAKE droughts?
