Getting into outer space might be easier than getting permission to build a privately-owned spaceport, but Elon Musk’s SpaceX has passed the last hurdle from the federal government. Construction on the 56 acre spaceport near Brownsville, Texas will begin as soon as local licenses are approved.

The FAA’s decision is a monumental step forward on the path to making the long-planned spaceport a reality. This is major win for SpaceX, since the proposed spaceport will allow the company to launch from private property, rather than from Air Force facilities it currently uses.

Besides the idiocy of ever allowing PRIVATE activities in space .... courtesy of PoS Republican NASA budget cuts, you know because anything they can't steal they don't want money diverted to from activities they can steal it from .... only 56 acres, are you nuts. Kennedy Space Center is 140,000 acres for damn good reasons.

BOOM!! :eek::rolleyes::p

The largest launch facilities at KSC are on about 160 acres....those were used for the Space Shuttle Launches and eventually the SLS. Both of those launch systems are much larger and more powerful than anything Space X has. This includes the upcoming Falcon Heavy...which will also be launched from Pad 39. I suspect that 56 acres (which by the way is like 40 football fields) is plenty big enough for near term operations. It should also be noted that their rocket testing facility near Waco isn't that large either...and they perform full power tests of their rockets there all the time.

Someone's property butts up on this new spaceport and just plunged in value... ;)

A few rocket launches per year would be better than living next to railroad tracks or an interstate.
But then again, at least railroad tracks don't have a possibility of falling on your house. :D

In any case, this is awesome news, and I'm continuously impressed with their progress. I hope in my lifetime we'll see space travel become regular enough that private sector will be under considerable competition for the commercial rewards of space flight. If you think about it, we've really been there and done that with the Americas most of us are in right now.

Originally the expeditions were purely government funded, but where they really took off is when the private sector recognized the commercial opportunities of the "new world".

This is just our "new world" for the 21st century. :)
