Are any of you actually surprised by this?

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday voted in favor of advancing a proposal that could dramatically reshape the way consumers experience the Internet, opening the possibility of Internet service providers charging Web sites for higher-quality delivery of their content to American consumers.

Greed always wins.

And the majority who should care continue to remain willfully ingnorant and let it happen.

No surprise, Telco CEO turns FCC head, gives Telcos what they wanted forever, what a shock.

God damn politicians.
Even one of the Democratic commissioners who voted yes on Thursday expressed some misgivings about how the proposal had been handled.
If you're not 100% behind a proposal, why in the hell would you vote in favor of it? God forbid you go on record as voting against your party...

Don't forget that the previous FFC chair went to chair a teleco lobbying group. Basically they just switched jobs!

Sadly this is a very common practice in our government and military.

How so? I'm curious...

We are a radio streaming, web hosting and dedicated server hosting provider. The added cost to do business alone might just kill us.

Or if we don't "pay" for better bandwidth and our clients complain and go somewhere else that does...

Basically take your ball and go home small companies.

Reminds me of the whole corn industry in the US, all the politicians cycle in and out of heads of that industry, and surprise the industry gets exactly what they want.

Call your local politician or state senator. I am sure he will happily tell you that you should not be worried, and that he is looking out for your best interests!

Hard to be optimistic in the world/country. All I see is the rich get richer at the cost to the regular folks.
People need to start shooting more politicians in the face, sorry, it's true.

All industry, at this point. Look at all the generals who go into defense industry lobbying. This sucks, I need to contact my Congresspersons.

We really need some internet freedom fighters.

Non-lethal EMP attacks bringing shit down would be sweet!

Already did. But something tells me he doesn't give a f...

The real problem is that most government officials are either lawyers or lifetime politicians. They lack the background and life experience for empathy. Where are the garbage men? IT specialists? Foodservice workers? Factory workers? Hairdressers? Engineers? There is no representation for them. If they wish to be represented they must either try to get elected, or pay a lobbyist in order to further their special interests.

The system run by sociopaths who would buy you and sell you for a quarter.

Even if a garbage man or IT guy got there, the issue is the job is too big and they do too much. There isn't enough time in the year for them to know enough about the issues or talk to enough normal people; the way people get filtered in is by the "noise" they make. That noise, outside of very motivated people, is primarily done with money via advertisements, campaign donations, lobbyists, etc.

We need 10x or 100x as many representatives now that we're at 313M people. The final time the House was reapportioned by population was 1910, when we were at 92M people, and even then was when the Gilded Age was running, so it should have been higher then.

Each House member is responsible for representing 720,000 people. Each Senator is responsible for 3,130,000. There is no way they can actually be representative.

I wasn't saying that each individual group needs representation, merely that the career history of our politicians is either lawyer, or lifetime politician.

I don't think they ever really represented 'the people' anyway. They've pretty much catered to the monied class since it all began. It seems pretty clear cut to me.

Well, this nation was specifically set up not to be a democracy, to "cool down" the bad ideas of the mob. That being said, it's gone way too far.

"Well, Netflix slows down the internet cause there's just so much Netflix traffic! So we have to throttle them to speed back up the network"

"But you charged them to speed back up the connections between Comcast and Netflix right?"

"Yes, now you can watch Netflix videos full speed again no problem!"

"So won't this slow down the network like you said it supposedly did before?"

"Ummmm..."

"Aren't you just charging Netflix for bandwidth your network can already support? And you're just attacking them for extra cash cause you're a mega monopoly and getting away with it?"

"Er...well....."

"So now that Netflix is full speed again, I've not seen my internet net performance decrease in any way. In what way did you protect us as the consumer?"

"..........FCC JUST PASSED INITIAL VOTING TO ALLOW US TO CHARGE FOR WEB ACCESS!!!"

And here we are today

In the end it probably won't drum up enough support, but anyone into setting up a site dedicated to boycotting anyone (Netflix, Youtube, etcetera) who buys into this? Comcast et.al. will only be able to do this if the major players pay the money. If the major players see this as damaging to their bottom line they can just refuse to pay and call the ISPs bluff. Like I said probably won't get enough support, but then again I was amazed at the backing the anti-SOPA movement got.

We all know it was never intended to be a direct democracy to protect itself against mob rule however it's never really been a representative democracy either. I think it was more likely setup to protect the rich minority from the poor majority while throwing the common folk scraps every once in awhile to ease tensions . Like its functioning to this day.

Look how many times the rich wanted and tried to pass internet censorship even after all the backlash. They seriously don't give a fuck and will try it again really soon.

Oligarchy. Its purpose is representing the ruling classes.

I'm not a violent person at all -- but after all the corruption we are seeing, and how bad things are getting... I really wouldn't shed a tear if some corrupt piece of crap got popped in the face.

It really is sick to see how equality/fairness/justice can now be bought and sold by corrupt pieces of shit.

Your anger is directed at the wrong person.

We live in capitalism. The foundation of capitalism is that the capital rules. Economic reality will always trump political reality because politics is just make-belief whereas economics are reality based.

In capitalism the job of politicians is to advance the agenda of capital. Capital got politicians where they are, and they are (as you are) a slave to capital.

What you are asking for, an equal, fair, and just system, is not possible in capitalism because it goes against everything capitalism stands for.

or CEOs running for office. And ignorant voters who think they know what they're doing in offices because they worked in the industry. They may know what they're doing, but they'll only do it for money, not for the betterment of the country.

That's what the US Senate was for, and why it had 6 year terms, and why senators weren't elected by the general citizenry, but the upper chamber of a state's legislative body. The House was supposed to best represent the People and put up all sorts of ideas, while the Senate was the calm and deliberate group that applied the brakes when necessary. Obviously, that's no longer the case.
