Ilya Segalovich, the man who started the Russian equivalent of Google, has lapsed into a coma after complications of cancer treatment. He is on life support, showing no sign of brain activity and is not expected to recover. Segalovich is 48 years old and just took his company public in March.

Segalovich co-founded Yandex more than 20 years ago, building the company into one of the world’s largest search engines. By some measures, Yandex is one of the top-five global search engines, even nudging out Microsoft’s Bing in total number of searches.

Equivalent is a stretch. Yandex is a malware company running an ads business against a captive audience. Read up on their customer acquisition, it is almost all things that would be considered illegal in the US.
