My bad.....sorry about that. I was looking at HJC's at the same time & some wires got crossed.
Edit: Looks like these are made by HJC...

This subforum is turning into a slick deals copy and paste forum ... I don't know why we don't keep it hardware related.

I did not get this from slickdeals, I got it from my e-mail.

Good try though!

the gift card cant be used for the same purchase.

would have liked having a spare helmet for karting for $9.99 though...:-\

No, because that would be rather silly. However, if you're planning on buying more gear, then this is great. If I weren't in the middle of moving and all the expenses that go along with it, I'd jump on it as a spare helmet for friends. Have a new Neotech and RF1100, so pretty well covered in the lid department for myself. :)

When Kyle's fine with it and most members are okay with it too, then I see nothing wrong with it :)

Exactly. It's called [H]otDEALS, not [H]otHardWareOnlyDEALS, that's why. :p Consider that not everyone goes to, and many have never heard of, Slick Deals. I posted a Levi's sale a while back that I was sure everyone would've known about, but many people did not. Now if we're seeing the exact same thing at SD duplicated here, then sure, that might be a problem. But seeing how many folks find deals via email or in-store promotions, and so many people use both sites, there's going to be inevitable bleed over. Personally I like seeing a variety of things if they're truly awesome deals... and for the most part, that's really the only time you'll see things posted here that aren't HW/SW related.

JMHO! :)

I've got that helmet. I don't think it's particularly loud. It's pretty comfy.

Loud is a relative term...
I have an AFX-90 and think it is loud but web-bike world rates it as on the quiet side.
I think you could do a lot better for $260 too...
here's the 101 review, not sure how much changed to the 201 model.
http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/joe-rocket/rkt-101/

EDIT: Please don't take this as thread dumping, I am just giving my opinion and any helmet is a good helmet, I will never ride with out one.

I'm not sure but isn't that quite a lot of money for a helmet? Would you say this helmet is mainly for crotch-rocket streetbikes?

I'm going to be needing one this this summer as I anticipate getting a Quad and hitting the trails since my brother bought a cabin in northern Michigan. The AFX-90 mentioned in the post above is less than 1/3 the price which seems to suggest this is a pricey helmet. Not sure if I need an expensive helmet like a Joe Rocket for the trails.

Did anyone here actually buy it? Can I paypal you for your credit to buy mine? let's make this chain work!

edit:

1) We do not allow you to purchase this product with a Gift Card issued as a result of this sale or any prior “Almost Free” sale;
2) Likewise, you cannot purchase any future “Almost Free” sale item with the Gift Card issued as a result of this sale.

The AFX-90 has pretty good marks on web-bike world. It is a limited site in its helmets but gives a good breakdown of weight, shape and other general things. I am changing since I have been in mine for 5 months, but it is a tad to round for me even after break in, so I have very slight forehead pressure.
Sometime syou DO get what you pay for, I have heard good things about cheap and bad things about expensive...it's a tough piece of gear to buy and actually be fair on reviewing.
If you'd like to know more about it, PM me and I would even consider selling it, since like I said, I plan to switch for this season.

helmets dont care what you are riding

and no 260 is middle of the road for helmets

I would say high end is 400+ Shoei's, Arai's, ETC

but you can certianly go cheaper

helmets dont care what you are riding

YES, they do. Some helmets favor a standard touring ergonomic seating while some favor the tucked or forward lean of the super sports.
The difference isn't usually enough to make you change your mind, but the difference comes in in vent placement and the ventilation set-up.
For street riding, I see no reason to go above a DOT $200 helmet unless you really like a graphic or it's carbon fiber and you just want that exotic style.
The $200-300 can be sort of a grey area. The Bell RS-1 for example, great reviews and everyone says it is a better buy at the price than the $300-$400 members of the line.

I am far from an expert, but I research my a$$ off on helmets since it is the most crucial piece of gear from comfort and fit/safety.

My Shoei Neotec sells online for around $580 and MSRP is about $660; thankfully I paid ~$490 at an awesome sale locally (Road Rider in San Jose). $260ish is actually on the lower end and they go way up over $1k. You get what you pay for in many different ways: quality of materials, features, fit/finish, durability, etc. There's also a question as to "how much is your head worth?" to consider. Personally I'd never entrust my skull / brain to a cheap $100 helmet; not to mention they usual feel exactly that... cheap. As with everything, opinions are like assholes; everyone has them. Some people love the cheap helmets and wouldn't pay a dime more, which is totally their prerogative! The only person who can decide what helmet to buy for themselves is them. Go to a good motorcycle shop (they're a chain, but Cycle Gear usually has a good selection) and get someone who understands helmet fit and head sizes. Spend a good 30 minutes trying on different lids and get the one that fits/feels best and fits your budget.

ANYWAY!

As for riding a quad/atv I wouldn't really recommend a street bike helmet. Buy one that's better suited to off-road use. Not that a full face helmet like this won't work.

Helmets DO care what you are riding. Street bike helmets are not designed the same as dirt. Dirt are designed to take multiple impacts and still be usable.

sorry, helmets RARELY CARE.

and LOL at no reason to go above a 200$ DOT helmet(I used to think that too)

I have have Scorpion, KBC, HJC. My next will be a Shoei. They fit my head great, Arai's dont.

If you havent found the higher end helmet that fits you well, you dont know what you are missing. Comfort and quiet. My KBC is loud as hell but otherwise comphy, a bit tight on the top of my head

my HJC is a bit tight in front, quieter, however the foam just isnt that comfortable

Then I borrowed a friends RF1100 for a week, and I have wanted one ever since, just never around to spending the money :( and I ride less now that I work alot of more, moved closer to work, got married, and had a baby

DOT is the most basic cert, the SN's are above that(more stingent)

yet a 'sport bike helmet' will still work while riding a quad. hes certainly better off with the MX/Off road helmets, but if he wants a cheap 'street bike helmet' he can get one and still be 'safe'

I just hope he buys something full face, instead of a brain bucket :)

but you have a good point, assuming they are designed to take more hits(and they should be.....it makes sense) I hadnt thought about that

I meant as in reason to to above $200 doesn't mean it ill be better. My helemt was $75, it's DOT rated, vents pretty average, rated on the quiet side(although I feel it's loud), weight isn't terrible pretty average as well.
I am not saying I wouldn't ever pay more than that, but at a certain point you have to think about how much you ride and where.
A lot of time race helmets are very nice, light and quality. You also pay for a name. There are tons of examples of sub-$300 helmets that provide amazing experience for every day street riders.
Fit is also a big deciding factor, that Bell RS-1 I found for $100, I would love...it fits narrow though, I am neutral.
Sparkx S-07 has solid reviews and is suspect of being a sub brand of a larger company.
AGV K-3 has OK reviews and they are a great company, the shields run $60 each...
LS2 CR1 FF384/385 has a new presence as well that a lot of people need to discover.

The above person is right, it will ALWAYS be an opinion but in general you do get what you pay for, I think there are plenty of exceptions though.
I don't want this to be a pissing contest, I just like to see people who know hoe crucial a helmet is.

Could some one direct me to where MX helemts are meant to take more hits than street helmet? I can find anything on it.
If an MX helmet is DOT approved...there is no reason it is better.
The issue comes in with the visor and the goggle need. Right now dual sport street helmets are on the rise, the visor is redesigned for the high wind speeds on the street, buffeting and head checks.

The closest I can see is the difference between DOT and Snell testing. It's been a while since I rode, but if I recall correctly, DOT focuses on multiple single impact, while Snell focuses on multiple impacts in the same location. So if you were to use a helmet, say, in a car with a roll cage you planned on flipping, you'd want the Snell helmet. If you wanted something which would protect your head as you're rolling across the asphalt, you'd want the DOT helmet. Many helmets these days are both DOT and Snell approved.

Snell 2010 standard (which this deal is) ALSO takes testing into account based on head-size. IF you aren't a Large, you may want to read up on 2010 vs the older Snell standard.

Is this dead? I am going to buy some pants soon so I might as well buy an extra helmet for 10 bucks while I am at it. I don't see anything about a gift card though.

Having a helmet that passed DOT approval pretty much means the Company that makes that helmet paid DOT for the sticker or the right to sell them (like an import Tax on Non-American cars). Depending on the helmet law in your state, police can ticket you or not for wearing a Non-DOT helmet.

Yea, it's legal to sell non-DOT helmets and some states to require them to be DOT. Illinois is sad and we don't even have a helmet law. I think it's fine that it's up to the rider though, natural selection at its finest.

You in IL too? It's pretty sad how many squids there are here...

I am in Florida, we also have a No-Helmet Law and I sell more helmets now than before when we had the law in place... go figure! :D

Yea, it gets pretty bad in the Summer. Not even just no helmet, no jacket and shorts too...I just shake my head.
I'm near Chicago, south side suburbs so the frequency has made me expect it every where now, lol.

Meh... the price of my head is more then $10. I always stuck with Shoei RF1000's. Loved them for fit, feel, noise and quality.

edit: this was about 5 years ago when I use to ride.

A more expensive helmet doesn't necessarily provide better protection...

I am seconding this. I don't see any gift card deal, and the price is listed as $70 (~$82 with shipping)

In more ways than one it does but, even Companies like ARAI, which hand makes their helmets, have gone the way of other Companies and are now charging outrageous amounts of money for their stuff.
