How in the world can the countries with the most restrictions on the internet have any say so in how the rest of the world uses it?

A rival group — including China, Russia, Gulf Arab states and others — favors U.N. backing for stronger sway by governments over all levels of Internet affairs. They appeared to win a critical preliminary battle early Thursday when the meeting's chairman declared consensus on a proposal for a more "active" government role in Internet dealings.

I could see this issue getting very heated.

Maybe even to the point of conflicts.

If I look at porn, I'm getting a strongly worded letter by the United Nations Internet Council. Right?

I kinda liked the idea of each country decides what it wants for their own section of the internet. Although I'm not crazy about the countries that ultra-restrict it, I don't see that changing any time soon...

Of course it could just end up being like in Team America ...

Hans Blix: I'm sorry, but the UN must be firm with you. Let me see your whole palace, or else...
Kim Jong-il: Or erse what?
Hans Blix: Or else we will be very, very angry with you... And we will write you a letter, telling you how angry we are.

:D

I don't see the US of A handing over control of the internets to someone else. They have too much at stake to do so.

China, Russia and those Arab countries are a shining example of government allowing personal liberty. Or not.

To those countries who so cherish the freedom of their citizens, right down to how much food they are allowed......and to the United Nations for what ever purpose it serves.....I say f£€k you......now back to our usual programs.

U.S. to U.N.:
No country should be allowed to restrict the flow of information on the internet!

U.S. to MPAA/RIAA:
<whispering> Hey, this isn't going to stop us from seizing domains without cause or due process, monitoring all internet communications, and implementing that 6 strikes thing, is it?

MPAA/RIAA:
Of course not.

U.S. to U.N.:
Do I make myself clear?!?!

Since when do nations own the internet? It's not their property. Bastards. We need to gtfo of the UN asap...

western countries will love the un having control of the internet, they can blame all the censorship and monitoring on it whilst wanting it themselves.

Putin is free to do whatever he wants. He may even declare himself Tzar at some point. You don't call that liberty?

Because the "civilized" countries don't have the balls to say "no" anymore.

Because anytime we do, somehow we're seen as the "bad guys".

Eventually, people from the "civilized" countries will have to live under the auspices of those we refused to fight against...and they'll wish for the good ol' days when freedom actually meant something.

They'll never let it happen. We're the top contributor to the UN and the primary power behind their pathetic "peacekeeping forces". We leave, and the rest of the structure collapses under the weight of all the dictators and tyrants whose nuts the UN insists on tickling.

They'll be about as effective as they were in Rwanda, its ignorant to give oversight to a useless body of hand wringers.

Yes, lets hand over the global exchange of information to petty dictators and tyrants... what could possibly go wrong?

I thought we pretty much had that already ... don't you mean "new" petty dictators and tyrants :p

If those oppressive countries want the internet censored then they should just cut themselves off from the cool kids' internet and make their own intranet. Still waiting for Iran to do this.

Those countries filter their net but I'm guessing that they want to prevent VPNs from being effective so they want control of the entire internet. Do us a favor and just completely isolate your country from the internet instead. They probably don't want an uprising.

So that instead of suppressing the flow of information, they can simply have the power to delete it ...?

They saw what happened to the firewalls in some of the recent uprising. They'd like to avoid that.

The US, the UK, Australia, Canada and a chunk of Europe rejected the treaty on grounds that it would disrupt the internet. China and Iran rejected it when someone stuck in the idea that ITU governance should ensure human rights are respected online.

This thing is beyond dead. It's been killed, shot in the head, and a stake has been driven through its heart JUST incase it comes back as either a zombie or vampire. The bullet they shot it with was silver, so werewolves are taken care of too.

It's done.

Hey, the United Nothing does even better than this. Remember when they put Iran on the panel for women's rights and other moronic nonsense like this. This organization is a joke. They are useless, they do nothing but enrich themselves. One of the best jobs you can possibly have is to work at the UN in their bureaucracy.

Perhaps that is the point, they want to own the internet.

In a way every nation already owns its internet, simply put they do as they freaking please within their country, the problem gets to be when they want to communicate with other countries.

I am guessing that many nations such as china and iran just want to be able to get some sort of standards that will allow them to get more control while still allowing world wide communication but for some reason they are coming up short right now.

On the other hand we could jsut be seeing the USA bias side of the story. the reality is the internet is a world wide phenomenon now and somewhat like the oceans many countries consider it unfair the USA holds most of the control over domain names et al.
