I keep on seeing people with new Ultrabooks, and they upgrading the HDD to SSD.
Which is fine and dandy, but some cases normal size HDD or SSD do not fit.

Reason is due to this new Half Height Style HDD. So some users start Taking the SSD out of its case (Void warranty at the same time) and inserting it into the Ultrabook.
This is totally acceptable,

BUT SOME DO NOT SECURE IT DOWN, so because the SSD with out a case is even slimmer, it will wiggle around. I saw one Wiggle itself defective. Other managed to short the Mobo and SSD. And one wiggled it self loose from the connector.

SO PLEASE IF YOU ADD SSD into an ULTRABOOK do 2 things.

-Find the correct Sized SSD like 830 and 840 SSD by Samsung.
Also some ADATA and Intel come in a Half Size.

-If your drive came dirt cheap and was a larger sized style SSD, please secure the SSD solid somehwere double sided tape or screws.

Was fixing some 5 Ultrabooks today that came in over the weekend ... non of the other fools wanted to do service on them
This ghettoness just got me face palming ... all day long ...

But yeah SSD inside some older laptop works wonders.
Installed 3 SSD today one in a HP AMD Dual Core Laptop with touch screen and an older HP Elite
and my personal Acer S3 i3 finnaly got one also.

But its only worth it if you do not need the space. But i what normally do is, Take their old HDD and install them into compact External USB cases.

Now they have the speed and the space if needed Just plug in the HDD.

PS: if you decide to take the SSD apart please keep the case, you never know if you will need it again so you can swap the HDD into something else that may need the Screw Pin outs.
 
Most Ultrabooks require a 7mm drive height, which limits HDD capacity due to smaller number of platters. The standard 9.5mm SSDs can be taken apart and actually shaved down or the heatsinks replaced with thinner/wider ones and put back together to slim them down to 7mm size.

They really need to just opt with mSATA on these Ultrabooks. There's no need for SSDs
 
Some already have mSATA, they are using the other plug for standard HDD due to space.

350-500GB Saves them cash i believe.

Some Ultrabooks just run off a standard HHD hence people swapping them i believe.

The problem isn't the removal of the Chunky case its the installation with the lack of securing the Drive down which causes damage not due to vibration but rather disconnects or metal to circuitry shortage. As stated in the first post.
 
I'm glad I found this thread - I'm considering getting an Ultrabook next summer and I have a Samsung 830 SSD I would hate to see go to waste. I wonder if I'll even be able to use it.
 
Question- if you get one of the thinner SSD drives (like the Samsung) will it be a universal fit in a larger HDD slot? I have a Dell XPS 17" L702X that I want to swap out the HDD for a SDD, but the Samsung I am looking at is thinner than the stock HDD by the specs. Will it work or will it flop around in there?

I have my Samsung 830 (thinner design) in my L502x, so I'm assuming the L702x should be an almost identical setup. If I remember correctly, the caddy holds the ssd firmly in place, so no wobbling to worry about. :)
 
Using the SSD as they are designs doesn't create any issues or problems in any similar HDD case specs. Since the SSD all come with the same Pin outs as the HDD so you just screw them in or clamp them in place, most HDD caddies use the screw holes as reference points.

The problem only starts if the Ultrabook comes with a UltraSlim Type HDD.
And the user wants to install a SSD that was build with standard Laptop HDD Specs.
This will make the "fat" SSD not fit the Ultrabook unless you take the SSD out of the Casing.
People would bypass this by taking the "fat" SSD apart and toss the housing and only use the board by itself.

Sorry I don't have a Fat HDD Lying around to compare but Fat HDD has the same Thickness of Fat SSD.
Notice SSD without Housing has no Vertical Screw Points to secure (Which in some cases is a problem)

Fat HDD/SSD = 9.5mm
Slim HDD/SSD = 7.0mm to 7.2mm ish

Just slap some double sided tape on the thin SSD and call it a day. It's all apple does.
