If you just couldn’t wait to order your new laptop before the manufacturers upgraded to Ivy Bridge and you purchased it from Dell or Origin PC, you may be in luck. Both companies have opted to do a free upgrade to Ivy Bridge as long as the computer hasn’t already shipped.

Both Dell and Origin PC have announced that they're going to voluntarily upgrade certain laptop or desktop orders to Intel's latest chip

99% of the people who buy from dell probably didn't even know sandy bridge in the first place. Still, it's a nice bonus and will at least keep their system relevant for a little bit longer.

I'd call thus good customer service. Most users wouldn't even notice the difference anyway, except perhaps for battery life.

Well, it's more than most companies are typically willing to do for people. Even if the buyer isn't aware of what the technical differences are, they'll know their brand new computer wasn't "outdated" before it even shipped.

Good customer service? Come on man, it's a damn business, it has nothing to do with being 'nice'. Intuition tells me they have to be running low on sandybridge parts while at the same time, Ivy bridge parts are costing them less money.
