I am having a really hard time deciding between the the GTX 680 and 7970. I will be gaming at 1920x1080, 120hz. Currently I am only playing Battlefield 3, I will likely be playing Diablo 3 and CS:GO once they release, not sure what else coming up.

If you were to just factor in BF3 and 1920x1080, which of the 2 would you go with?

I don't want to hear any "You don't need this card to play at that resolution/1 monitor" garbage. Look at the Hard review of the 680 vs 7970 benchmarks and you clearly see at max settings the 7970 even dips into the 40's at plenty of points at 1920x1200 maxed. I need/want to keep 120fps+.

I have a 7970 and play on 1920x1080 60 hz. From my experience, you'll be no where near the 120 mark unless you turn down the settings tremendously. My vote goes for the 680. BF3 just so happens to be one of the games that the gtx 680 blows the roof off of. Sure, there are a few games that the 7970 wins in, but in battlefield's case, the 680 is a wide margin winner.

really? where do you see this? pretty sure they are close in bf3 =p

The 680 is the best option for your needs. I also play BF3 more than anything else at the moment, at 1080p. If I were buying new today I'd buy the 680.

for me it was the opposite once SLI vs CFX came into the picture, the 7970 took the lead.

but either way, for 1 card a 680 is a good bet

I just want to be clear that I do acknowledge that the 680 is faster in single player and is cheaper.

I'm just wondering where people are getting this notion that 680 somehow blows the 7970 away?

If it's not for 3 screens, and if you only plan to use one card, then gtx 680 . If you plan to use 3 screens and / or two cards, then amd is the way to go I say because gtx 680 atm, does not scale well in several games, if that will change or not no one knows.

Where are you guys getting that the 680 kills the 7970 in BF3? That isn't true especially when it comes to the multi-player mode.

where are you getting 'you guys' from? one person said that it 'blows the roof off of' BF3 which isn't exactly a technical term and he's not exactly wrong. the 680 performs great in BF3. if you're buying new and strictly for BF3 at 1920x1200 or 1080p then the 680 is the better card.

They are only using single player. MP is more CPU heavy but you can reasonably extrapolate performance to MP. For the OP, the most relevant results are the bottom two charts:

1920x1200 FXAA - 680 is 16% faster
1920x1200 4X MSAA - 680 is 12% faster

It's also cheaper than 7970, therefore for OP's needs the 680 is a no brainer.

I get 90-120fps average on most maps Ultra settings 2/4xaa on 1920x1080 120Hz Samsung using dual 7970's, playing the game is like a dream come true!

Whether you go 680 or 7970, make sure you get two because 100+FPS ballpark range Ultra settings at 1080p definitely needs it!

Well that's most disappointing news haha. I could play on ultra (no aa) with a 6950 unlocked and keep above 60-70FPS so I would've though (and based on benchmark reviews) that an OC 7970/680 would be able to sustain 120 no problem (aa probably off).

I've used both, OC vs OC, 680 wins in single monitor 120hz BF3.

I am leaning this way. Either way I will end up likely getting a second one in a couple months but I will only be buying one up front so I really wanted to base the opinions on 1 card/1monitor.

I was hoping one card could handle 120hz but maybe that is just unrealistic.

I will say that anything above 90FPS is silky smooth IMO. Yes 120FPS is great and obviously the aim is to average 120FPS on a 120Hz monitor. That said, you won't notice a big difference once you get past around 85-90FPS... I definitely notice the slowdown once it gets into the 70's.

I haven't seen the 680 benchies but if that thing can pull off 80+ FPS on a 120Hz monitor on ultra settings in BF3 you will have a fantastic time!

Get the 7970 and rig another fan inside the case to force more air through the card. With Voltage mods you should be able to hit 1200.

Add the tweaking from Ati Tray Tools and it is better than 680GTX

You start adding SSAA/Negative LOD/Trilinear AF and the 7970 pulls ahead.
ATI Tray Tools makes the 7970 stand out ahead IMO. The Tweaks really let you use the 384 bit bus to enhance the game beyond what the 680 is capable of.

Ati tray tools huh?
Brings back memories for sure haven't used it since X1900xtx days .
Ray is fully updating and supporting this for Tahiti now?
If so good to hear. I will have to check it out.

Recently owned and played bf3 with the following cards at 2560x1600:

radeon 6990
gtx 590
gtx 580 SC
single radeon 6970
twin frozr 6950

The nvidia cards just "feel" smoother in bf3, at the same fps - a seat of the pants observation that is echoed in [H]'s review and others. So my vote would be the 680, even though I think it would be more fun to OC the 7970.

Of course the 680 feels smoother.....it's better than thoes cards. And the 6990 suffers from a small amount of microstutter.

I'd put the 7970 overclocked with
-10 LOD/Alpha tweaks/4 minimum & 4 maximum theads/ x3 Temporal AA/Flip que 1/Forced 75 hz//Enable Surface format optimizations/Optimize pixel shader code/Max playable AMSAA/SSAA & Edge detect against 680GTX anyday.

And no FSAA. it reduces sharpness.

He didn't mention the 680.... He compared 6990, 590, 580, 6970, 6950... ;)

Anywho, I agree with his statement anyway. I noticed this with my temp cards. During BF3 I went from single 6970 to dual 6970 back to single to dual 6770 to currently borrowing 2 GTX 550 TI's and while the 2 TI's are (by far) the slowest, it does FEEL "smoother". I feel like I don't get as much ... "input lag" when I am looking around. Maybe this is a biproduct of having to drop to 1680 (FPS was too low at high+ with the TI's @ 1080). But it feels smoother at a lower FPS than my single or dual 6970 did.

Well in the end I guess it didn't really matter, I am tired of these 550 TI's and I didn't want to wait any longer so I overnighted a 7970 ;). Knowing my luck the 680's will come back in stock later today but if I wanted it to ship today overnight then I had to get the order placed.

I think it's a negligible difference between the 2 anyway.

*sigh* and now the 680 is back in stock hah. Impatience FTW.

I don't think it matters all that much. The 680 is slightly better but either card will easily play anything. These cards are overkill for todays games on medium res setups.

I can tell you that I play the same games at the same res and just ordered a Galaxy GTX 680 over getting a 7970. I literally had about a 30 second window on the egg to get it ordered.

I upgrade to often to let the small difference bother me anyway, I just thought it was funny.

TheCommander, medium resolution, read my post ;)

This one card won't drive 120fps for 120hz @ 1080p on ultra with any AA (either 680 or 7870) so ... no, no they aren't overkill. (BF3 anyway). It depends on your wants and such of course, but for MOST [H] members, these cards are far from overkill, even at 1080p.

7970 will push BF3 @ 1080p 120hz with adaptive AA on, Edge detect. Use Temporal AA/non trilinear AF. Might have to tweak some details from ultra but not many.

Adaptive AA for AMD cards was added last patch I think and it works very well.

Thanks for the tip I'll give it a try.
