I'm in the process of building an ESXi white box. I have a motherboard that I feel has all the specs I need but I'm still trying to get my head around the advantages of IOMMU. The reason I asked is because I'm trying to figure out if this means that I can use hardware that is unsupported by ESXi but support in the guest. I have a quad port adaptec nic that is recognized by Ubuntu but not by VMWare. I didn't want to go out and spend extra money on gigabit nics that I really don't need when I can just use what I have for testing purposes. Any info and help would be appreciated. TIA

You shouldn't have any issues as long as the board supports iommu. I'm using an asus m4a89td with 16gb of ram for an all-in-one solution and have had no issues. By chance what motherboard are you using?
 
I'm using a MSI 970A-G45 and I'm getting a 95w thuban. I wanted an all in one solution but I've read about pfsense in esxi and was was unsure about the NAS solution since I don't have a raid controller.
