There are 7 PCI-E slots. Each slot has an extender ribbon cable coming from it. Bandwidth is not the issue. There are simply no more physical connections, so using the ASUS board mentioned, nothing will take it above 7 graphics cards.
Using a different motherboard is another matter, but Silverstone have based this case around the ASUS supercomputer boards which have 7 slots.

i think he was talking about using a splitter to make each x16 slot into two x8 slots. with a modular case where you can put the cards anywhere, this should be feasible. i wonder why they used a mix of 480s and 580s. maybe thats what they had on hand, or do you think theres some incompatibility problem there?

I don't have any insider knowledge of the Silverstone stuff, I am just reading the same sources as you guys.
At a guess I would say they started with a 4-way SLI setup and then thought "how can we make this more extreme?". AFAIK 4-way is the max cards supported by mainstream drivers\chipsets for rendering. Then they just threw in the extra cards for more computational power rather than rendering.
